With Kyle Schwarber reportedly off the board after re-signing with the Phillies and Pete Alonso still surfacing in rumors, the Red Sox are laying out all their options.

That includes free-agent slugger Eugenio Suárez, the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier wrote Tuesday from MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando.

Suárez reportedly came up in conversations and is being viewed as a “fallback option” should the Red Sox not retain third baseman Alex Bregman or sign Alonso, who could play first base and serve as a designated hitter.

Check out this except from Speier:

Schwarber stood alongside Pete Alonso (38 homers in 2025) as the players who most directly fit the Red Sox’ sought-after description of a middle-of-the-order hitter who can launch the ball. While Eugenio Suárez — coming off a 49-homer season — also has enormous power, his .298 OBP in 2025 suggest a hitter who more likely slots deeper in a lineup.

That said, the Red Sox have had conversations with and about Suárez — potentially as a fallback option at third base should Alex Bregman sign elsewhere, or perhaps as a first base complement to Bregman if the third baseman does return to Boston.

If the Red Sox are able to retain Bregman and sign Alonso — perhaps a dream scenario for the Fenway Faithful — Boston almost certainly would not make a run at Suárez. Adding one but not the other might make Boston view Suárez differently, though.

After hitting 49 home runs and compiling 118 RBIs across 159 games, Spotrac lists the market value for the 34-year-old at two years and $30 million.

However, it’s worth noting multiple reports have surfaced stating Bregman remains at the top of Boston’s list of priorities.
