The Patriots made changes to their practice squad Tuesday.

Running back D’Ernest Johnson and cornerback Miles Battle were re-signed to the practice squad Tuesday after clearing waivers. The Patriots also signed veteran wide receiver Trent Sherfield and offensive tackle Lorenz Mets to the practice squad.

In a corresponding move, the Patriots released wide receiver Brandon Smith and defensive tackle Fabien Lovett from the practice squad.

Johnson and Battle have both spent time on the Patriots’ 53-man roster this season, with Johnson carrying the ball 14 times for 25 yards in eight games. He’s also contributed as a kick returner. Battle appeared in five games, primarily on special teams.

Sherfield, 29, is an accomplished NFL receiver. He’s in his eighth NFL season, now with his seventh team. The 6-foot-1, 206-pound wideout has 89 career receptions for 1,034 yards with six touchdowns. Prior to signing with the Patriots, Sherfield spent time with the Cardinals and Broncos this season. He entered the NFL with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt in 2018. He’s also played with the 49ers, Dolphins, Bills and Vikings. His best NFL season came in 2022 with the Dolphins, when he caught 30 passes for 417 yards with two touchdowns.

Sherfield joins wide receivers Jeremiah Webb and John Jiles Jr. on the practice squad. The Patriots have Stefon Diggs, Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas and rookies Kyle Williams and Efton Chism at wide receiver on their 53-man roster.

Metz is a 6-foot-9, 335-pound German-born offensive lineman in his third NFL season. He’s previously spent time with the Bears, Giants and Buccaneers.

The Patriots still have an open spot on their 53-man roster. It could be filled with cornerback Alex Austin or running back Terrell Jennings, both of whom are eligible to be activated off injured reserve.
