The Boston Red Sox appear to have some new plans for Roman Anthony.

Anthony has started rounding into form over the last few weeks at the plate, slashing .328/.423/.475 since June 20, so the club’s top priority will be keeping him in the lineup on a permanent basis. Red Sox manager Alex Cora has been, allowing him to face both right- and left-handed pitchers, and to continue being able to do that, the organization is having the rookie learn a new position.

Anthony was seen working out in left field on Tuesday, as shared by Audacy’s Rob Bradford.

“Keagan, he’s literally spent more time in left field than anywhere else in the minor leagues! What are you talking about?”

Yes, you’re right about where he’s primarily been positioned across stints in Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, but the 21-year-old has only served as a right fielder and designated hitter throughout his first 25 games in Boston. I don’t know if you’ve heard or not, but there’s a gigantic green wall in left field at Fenway Park — making it unlike any position he’s played to this point.

The Red Sox haven’t hidden from the fact they’ll soon have six players (Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, Masataka Yoshida and Rob Refsnyder) vying for just four total spots — meaning they might be looking to consolidate. Anthony isn’t going anywhere, though, so the more he can do, the better.
