The Boston Red Sox are looking to bounce back from their brutal loss to the Philadelphia Phillies when they take the field on Tuesday night. Ahead of the game, the Phillies made a roster move involving one of their veteran relief pitchers.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Jordan Hicks was attempting to escape a bases-loaded jam with no outs. Edmundo Sosa was at the plate, and the Phillies seemed to be in prime position to walk away with a win.

While that ended up happening, it didn’t happen in the way they expected it to. On the fifth pitch of the at-bat, Carlos Narvaez’s glove got in the way of Sosa’s swing, resulting in catcher’s interference. Sosa took his base, with Brandon Marsh scoring the game-winning run, giving Philadelphia a 3-2 win.

Getting walked off on a catcher’s interference call is tough, and Boston will be eager to get back in the win column after that one. Ahead of their clash on Tuesday, Philadelphia lost one of their bullpen arms, as they placed Joe Ross on the injured list, with Alan Rangel being called up to replace him.

“Prior to tonight’s game against the Boston Red Sox, the Phillies placed RHP Joe Ross on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 7/21) with back spasms,” the Phillies said in a post on X. “To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, RHP Alan Rangel was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.”

Ross hasn’t been all that effective for Philly this season, but they’d obviously rather have him at their disposal. In 31 games this season, Ross has a 2-1 record with a 5.28 ERA and 34 strikeouts. He gave up three hits and one run in 1.2 innings of work in his most recent outing against the Los Angeles Angels on July 20.

In his absence, Rangel will return to the majors for the first time since June. Rangel has only made two appearances with the Phillies this season, posting a 2.25 ERA over eight innings of work, while also recording a save along the way.

Philadelphia should be able to get by without Ross, but it will be interesting to see how manager Rob Thomson manages his bullpen throughout the remainder of this series. First pitch for Tuesday night’s contest is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET.
