FOXBORO — The competition at wide receiver this summer should be fast and furious. With 12 wideouts on the 91-man roster currently fighting for six spots and a few of those slots up for grabs, we’re keeping a dedicated eye on how the battle goes.

This was a fun practice. The last “ramp-up” workout before the pads come on and the kids start to whale on each other featured a slew of moderately deep throws.

The completion percentage was down a bit for Drake Maye and the rest of the QBs (Phil Perry had Maye as 8-for-17 in 11-on-11s). That’s to be expected with the nature of the throws.

So who did what? Pop continues to pop.

DeMario Douglas had the big play of the day, a deep catch down the right sideline on a scramble play when Maye was flushed all the way to the edge before uncorking downfield over Christian Gonzalez. Douglas caught three of the four balls sent his way in 11-on-11, all from Maye. He also had a 7-on-7 catch from Joshua Dobbs.

The eye-opening catch of the day in 7-on-7 was a Maye-to-Javon Baker bomb when the second-year wideout slipped loose behind the defense and was all alone.

Maye made a lot of throws into tight windows downfield. One got broken up in the seam on a play by Robert Spillane intended for Hunter Henry. He was able to find Henry over a leaping linebacker soon after.

Stefon Diggs had two catches on six targets. One of the misses was a drop, the other was a hotly contested play with Gonzalez on the sideline where both players toppled into the Gatorade jugs.

Kayshon Boutte continues to get plenty of run with the top group. And TreVeyon Henderson was a frequent target of Dobbs when running with the second group.

Henderson caught all four balls sent his way.
