Well, the win streak is over. The game, honestly, was fairly predictable: Michael Wacha did Michael Wacha things and shoved, Dustin May performed above expectations but it wasn’t fantastic, and the Red Sox couldn’t get the lead back after they lost it.
Three Studs:
Romy Gonzalez: Went 2-4 today and also gave the Red Sox two runs with his RBI double in the bottom of the first.
Trevor Story: Gave the Sox their 3rd run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th. It truly is the best to see him having a good season in Boston, after all the seasons he was sidelined with injuries.
Dustin May (kinda): I’d honestly say he performed above expectations, and I’m partially giving him Stud Status tonight solely for the energy he brought onto the mound. It’s clear the pitching coaches have been working with him on not throwing his bad pitches. His line was mixed, with 3.2 IP, 6 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts, but he did give the Red Sox the chance to win. They just didn’t sufficiently take it.
Three Duds:
The bullpen except for Chris Murphy, and even he wasn’t stellar: As soon as Chris Murphy got replaced, hell broke a bit loose. Jordan Hicks gave up a 3-run bomb to Jonathan India, who had been striking out all series, and The Pasquatch got an RBI hit after Isaiah Campbell hit Randal Grichuk with a pitch, and then he stole second and third, which allowed Pasquantino to drive him in. And while Chris Murphy didn’t give up any runs, he hit not one but two guys with pitches. Not ideal.
The defense: In the top of the 6th, Rafaela made things harder for Chris Murphy when he didn’t cleanly throw the ball that Jarren Duran had managed to catch, which allowed the runners, who had been forced back to first and second, to go to second and third. There was another throwing error as well from Alex Bregman, who hadn’t had any errors for several months but has now had 2 in the last 3 games.
Ceddanne Rafaela/Masataka Yoshida: Both went 0-3 with one strikeout each. Yoshida really had fewer hits than Connor Wong today.
Play of the Game: Castig Showed Up on WEEI During the Game
This game was so meh/bleh/blah that this is really the only good thing I can mention. I miss Joe all the time.
