The New England Patriots play the Washington Commanders in both teams’ first preseason game on Friday night.

One of the Commanders biggest stars (wide receiver Terry McLaurin) has been at the center of trade rumors between the two teams for the entire month of August, since requesting a move out of the nation’s capital.

Patriots insider Chad Graff wrote recently that a deal between New England and Washington involving the two-time Pro Bowler was “a bit unlikely,” but that hasn’t stopped analysts and fans from discussing the rumors.

Former Patriots wide receiver Chris Hogan recently talked about the McLaurin chatter with Christopher Price of The Boston Globe and said, while a trade “might not make any sense,” he’d still inquire about the possibility.

“I definitely would knock on some doors, see what (the Commanders) are after. A trade just might not make any sense if they’re going to be asking for too much and it might not really fit for New England,” Hogan said on “The Patriots Report” podcast. “But I would certainly kick the can on that one a little bit.”

The Ohio St. product skipped the Commanders minicamp in June and the beginning of training camp in July but ended his holdout on July 27. McLaurin hasn’t started practicing yet, however, as he was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list with an ankle injury.

“Scary Terry” is coming off arguably his best season in 2024, when he finished with 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns on 117 targets. McLaurin earned a second team All-Pro honor last year and his second Pro Bowl nod as well.
