The Boston Celtics are heading down a troubling path.
Star forward Jayson Tatum is sidelined with an Achilles injury, and the team traded away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis during the offseason. The Celtics find themselves in a challenging position, neither a championship contender nor a lottery team. This situation raises questions about their future.
ESPN’s NBA Insiders ranked all 30 NBA teams based on their projected performance three years from now, placing Boston at 13th overall.
“A year ago, the Celtics were the defending champions en route to dominating the Eastern Conference for years,” Tim Bontemps wrote Tuesday. “Then, Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles in May, Boston failed to get out of the second round and the team traded Porzingis and Jrue Holiday this summer.
“It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change in the NBA, even though a core of Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White plus strong management in coach Joe Mazzulla and president of basketball operations Brad Stevens portends a quick bounce-back, assuming Tatum is healthy, as expected, in 2026-27.”

Boston has struggled to develop young talent due to their success, resulting in low draft picks in recent years.
Brown and Tatum are both under 30, but they have combined for 1,188 regular-season NBA games, a lot of miles for two young players.
The Celtics must successfully draft young talent in the coming seasons if Boston aims to compete for a championship within three years.
