The New England Patriots addressed their need for a running back Tuesday — albeit with a somewhat unexpected acquisition.

The Patriots, who lost running back Antonio Gibson to a reported season-ending injury on Sunday night, signed Jashaun Corbin to their practice squad and released offensive lineman Royce Newman from the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Here’s what New England’s depth chart now looks like without Gibson:

    • Active roster: Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson
    • Practice squad: Terrell Jennings, Jashuan Corbin

Corbin split his college career between Texas A&M (2018-2019) and Florida State (2020-2021) before going undrafted in 2022.

He spent the 2022 season on the New York Giants’ practice squad, then after a stint on the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad in 2023, he returned to New York to appear in six regular-season games for the Giants. Corbin record just one yard on one carry to go along with three catches for 12 yards in those six games while playing primarily on special teams.

Corbin did find recent success in the United Football League, leading the UFL in rushing in 2025 (514 yards in 10 games) as a member of the San Antonio Brahmas. He also tallied 252 yards as a kick returner for the Brahmas. But the 25-year-old seems more like a depth option than a viable fill-in for Gibson.

It’s possible the Patriots could elevate Jennings to the active roster while keeping Corbin on the practice squad. They also could explore their options via free agency or trade, although both markets aren’t particularly strong. Either way, it appears New England is casting a wide net, as the team hosted a pair of free-agent running backs — Deon Jackson and Damien Martinez — for workouts Tuesday, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

For now, the Patriots will hope Stevenson can fix his turnover issues (three fumbles in three games) while potentially getting the rookie Henderson more involved in the run game. They’ll have a good opportunity to get the rushing attack going against the New Orleans Saints, who are allowing 122.2 rushing yards per game.
