It’s been one week since Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow pumped the brakes on the club hiring a general manager. So no time like the present for the latest rumor on who could be moving on up.

“At what point does the Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham start getting mentioned — either here or elsewhere — as a GM candidate?” Masslive.com’s Sean McAdam wrote Sunday.

“The Red Sox have consistently turned out top prospects from their system the last few seasons, and with all the emphasis industry-wide on internal development, Abraham should be on some teams’ lists,” McAdam added.

According to his profile on LinkedIn, Abraham joined the Red Sox in 2013 and currently holds the title of Senior Director, Player Development.

Abraham attended St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Mass. and the College of the Holy Cross, according to MiLB.com’s Ryan Sheahan, and was the Red Sox bullpen catcher when the club won the 2013 World Series.

“Among the players to make their big league debut under Abraham are Jarren Duran, Brayan Bello, Tanner Houck, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, Triston Casas, Kutter Crawford, and Connor Wong––with many more on the way,” Sheahan noted.

Last month, WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported Breslow plans to hire a general manager after the 2025 season.

But at the club’s end-of season press conference, Breslow sounded noncommittal on the idea.

“I’ve been so consumed with the postseason. I know that I made some comments that I feel like it could be a good time to kick off that search,” Breslow said, according to Masslive.com’s Chris Cotillo. “I’m not sure exactly what the timeline might be. Obviously, we had a significant loss in Paul leaving to go to Washington. Figuring out the best structure for the front office will be a priority, but exactly what those roles look like, I’m not sure yet.”

Paul would be Paul Toboni, who the Washington Nationals hired last month as their new head of baseball operations.

The 35-year-old Toboni had been an assistant general manager for the Red Sox and one of the candidates to be the new GM in Boston.

The 45-year-old Breslow has overseen all baseball operations for the Red Sox without a general manager in place since replacing Chaim Bloom in 2023.
