Baylor Scheierman will be in the Boston Celtics’ plans for at least another season, it appears.

The Celtics are exercising Scheierman’s $2.74 million team option for the 2026-27 season, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported Thursday.

Boston had until Friday to make a decision on Scheierman’s 2026-27 option. He has another club option for the 2027-28 season (with a deadline of Oct. 31, 2026) before hitting restricted free agency in 2028.

The Celtics are in an interesting position with Scheierman, their first-round pick (30th overall) in the 2024 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward was a prolific shooter in college and has shown upside as a playmaker, a combination that should intrigue president of basketball operations Brad Stevens as he seeks wing depth behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Scheierman has yet to see much action this season, however, averaging just 8.5 minutes per game with three total points in Boston’s first four contests. Of the 13 standard-contract players on the Celtics’ roster, only Jordan Walsh has played fewer minutes than Scheierman, who to this point is behind Sam Hauser and Josh Minott in head coach Joe Mazzulla’s rotation.

A lot can change over the course of a season, and Scheierman should get a larger opportunity to prove himself at some point. He’ll be 26 years old next season, however, and if the Celtics want to put a championship-level supporting cast around Tatum when he returns from a ruptured Achilles, they’ll need Scheierman to prove he can provide real long-term value sooner rather than later.

The Celtics are back in action Friday night in Philadelphia, as they begin NBA Cup play with a rematch against the 76ers, who defeated Boston in last Wednesday’s regular-season opener.
