SAN JOSE, Calif. — Partway through training camp in 2019, the Patriots traded for a tight end named Eric Saubert. Less than three weeks later, they cut him. Saubert’s name likely is unfamiliar to most New England fans, unless they happened to watch one of the two passes he caught from Jarrett Stidham that preseason. But the 31-year-old still has strong memories of his cup of coffee in Foxboro, which taught him lessons he’s applied throughout his meandering NFL career. “I remember I was traded mid-training camp,” Saubert, now with the Seahawks, said Wednesday at Seattle’s Super Bowl LX hotel.…

The top two centers on last season’s Celtics depth chart are about to become teammates in Golden State. The Atlanta Hawks reached an agreement Wednesday night to trade Kristaps Porzingis to the Warriors for guard Buddy Hield and disgruntled forward Jonathan Kuminga, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported. The move reunites Porzingis with veteran big man Al Horford, who left the Celtics last summer to sign with the Warriors. Boston traded Porzingis to Atlanta during the same offseason roster overhaul, but injuries and illness limited him to 17 games for the Hawks. He did not dress for either of the team’s games…

Wednesday’s game against the Boston Celtics should have been a cakewalk for the Houston Rockets. Not only were the Celtics on the second half of a road back-to-back, but they were also missing Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Sam Hauser. Boston was so depleted that Joe Mazzulla was forced to start backups Baylor Scheierman, Luka Garza and Ron Harper Jr. — a trio with 13 combined NBA starts — alongside Derrick White and Neemias Queta. The Rockets entered the game favored by 7.5 points, and it probably should have been more. After all, they’d won eight of their last 10…

The Boston Red Sox addressed their need for an infielder on Wednesday, reportedly signing utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa to a one-year contract. Kiner-Falefa, 30, is a versatile defender with big-league experience at every position except first base. He has primarily played shortstop (450 games), third base (234 games) and second base (90 games) in his eight-year MLB career. Last season, Kiner-Falefa played in 119 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates before being claimed off waivers by the American League champion Toronto Blue Jays. In 138 games between Pittsburgh and Toronto, he slashed .262/.297/.334 with two home runs and 40 RBI. The…

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Tony Dews remembers the phone call. For him, it was a routine checkup on one of his players. He had just been hired as the Patriots’ new running backs coach, and wanted to begin laying relationship bricks on a regular March day. For Rhamondre Stevenson, that afternoon was one of the last he ever spent with his father. “I call all the guys every couple of weeks or so, and I called the check on (Stevenson), and he was doing well,” Dews remembered. “His dad was there, and while I was talking to him, his dad…

Who is he and where did he come from? He’s Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The former Ranger also spent time with the Yankees before signing a 2-year, $15 million deal with the Blue Jays in 2024, who then traded him to the Pirates at that year’s trade deadline, only to take him back a year later after he was cut by Pittsburgh. He’s best known as the man who failed to take a secondary lead and got picked off at the plate as a pinch runner in the World Series. If this all sounds familiar, it’s because I conditionally passed on him on…

The Seattle Seahawks were potentially dealt a significant blow prior to Super Bowl LX. Nick Emmanwori, their rookie safety who has been described as an “animal” by Tom Brady, suffered an ankle injury during practice on Wednesday at San Jose State University, according to a pool report released by the Pro Football Writers of America. “He had an ankle today,” Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said, per the report. “We brought him in to look at it, and we’ll kind of go from there to figure out what are the next steps?” NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport shared that the club…

Brad Marchand was not expected to play on Wednesday night. He did and, of course, the former Bruin captain lifted the Florida Panthers to a 5-4 shootout victory over the B’s. But unlike the shootout loss in Tampa on Sunday, this one could be considered a good loser point. The Bruins got third-period goals from Mark Kastelic and Casey Mittelstadt to erase a 4-2 deficit to send it to overtime, where both Joonas Korpisalo and Sergei Bobrovsky had to make several high danger saves. The best news for the B’s – and Team USA – was that Charlie McAvoy survived…
