More than five years after the club folded following the reorganization of Minor League Baseball, the Lowell Spinners are set to return. The Spinners, formerly the Short-Season Single-A affiliate of the Red Sox, will be reborn as a member of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. The new Spinners will become the league’s seventh active franchise and begin play in the upcoming 2026 season. A formal announcement is scheduled for Tuesday morning at Tsongas Center. The new club will play at Lowell’s LeLacheur Park and will be owned by local businessmen Marc Deschenes and John Croteau, both high-ranking executives with Pison…

MANSFIELD – Fourth-seeded Greater New Bedford Voke clinched a trip to the Div. 3 boy’s soccer state championship with a 3-1 victory over No. 16 Scituate. Greater New Bedford was playing in the Final Four for the first time since 2011. The Sailors (12-7-3) were a true Cinderella team of the tournament, knocking off top-seeded Medfield and then winning a 1-0 match against East Bridgewater in the Elite Eight, and making their first appearance of the tournament. “I spoke to my Athletic Director after preseason camp was done and he said, I don’t know what it is, and how far…

The New England Patriots have been flirting with disaster, and they’ve been doing it for nearly two years… Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper have essentially been the only tight ends on the active roster, serving as the two constants at the position while the organization cycled through numerous developmental options on the practice squad — like CJ Dippre, Jaheim Bell, Jack Westover, Mitchell Wilcox, Marshall Lang and Gee Scott Jr. Henry and Hooper have been tremendous since joining forces, combining for 158 receptions, 1,746 yards and 10 touchdowns over the course of the last two seasons — but that production…

After spending a decade diagnosing NFL offenses, former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson saw something for the first time in New England’s victory over the New York Jets. “I’ve never seen this before,” Johnson told co-host Phil Perry during The Breakdown on Monday night. Johnson and Perry highlighted TreVeyon Henderson’s third touchdown in New England’s 27-14 victory at Gillette Stadium. The six-yard passing touchdown from Drake Maye to Henderson gave the Patriots a 21-7 lead midway through the third quarter after a highlight-filled drive by the second-year QB. Johnson explained how the creativity from Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels created confusion…

LEOMINSTER — A second chance at the gold trophy now awaits the top-seeded Medfield girls’ soccer team. After coming heartbreakingly close to a D3 title last season, the Warriors dominated their semifinal with Pope Francis from start to finish on Monday night at Doyle Field. Led by two goals from Morganne Kilmer and a goal and an assist from Sydney Heavey, the top seed booked a return date against Nipmuc via a 5-1 win over the Cardinals on a bitterly cold night. “There’s nothing that we were going to let get in our way.” Medfield coach Melinda Lohan said. “We…

Drake Maye is defying most expectations during an MVP-caliber second season with the New England Patriots, but not everybody is surprised. Dan Patrick invited ESPN analyst Tim Hasselbeck to remind everyone of his pre-draft comments about Maye. The former NFL quarterback made a statement that was considered bold in November 2023. “Drake Maye is to me, about as perfect of a prospect that I have ever seen in 15 years at ESPN,” Hasselbeck said on “The Dan Patrick Show” two years ago. Hasselbeck recalled that proclamation when appearing on Monday’s show. “The hot takes aren’t really me,” Hasselbeck told Patrick. “That’s not…

How would you grade Craig Breslow’s trade deadline? Wait! Don’t answer that. Partially because it’s November and partially because we only care about one name right now: Steven Matz.A product of the New York Mets, Matz has had a rather unspectacular career. He finished 6th in Rookie of the Year voting back in 2016 and that was his best season in New York He spent a year in Toronto in 2021 and wowed Canada with his stuff over 29 starts. That would be the second best season of his career. That brought him to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he…

The Red Sox have decisions to make with two roster-related deadlines looming on Tuesday and Friday. They have until 4 p.m. ET Tuesday to add eligible prospects to their 40-man roster to protect them from next month’s Rule 5 Draft, and until 8 p.m. ET Friday to non-tender any of their arbitration-eligible players. There’s a strong possibility the Red Sox opt to solve two problems at once. They have dozens of Rule 5 eligible players this year but realistically will only clear roster space for a select few, such as hard-throwing righty David Sandlin, who posted a 3.97 ERA over…
