We like Mookie Betts and want him to be happy and feel fulfilled as a human. We don’t really like the ownership class and want them to, like, constantly have acid reflux or something. So it’s pretty great that Mookie won yet another award, this one for things he does off the field. Betts was named MLB’s 2025 Roberto Clemente award-winner for his philanthropic and community work. (Christopher Smith, MassLive)We also like it when star baseball players act just like us — everyone puts on their pants one leg at a time, so they say* — so it’s cool to…

The trophy case in the Smith household is in danger of breaking due to the weight of all the trophies and plaques. Westford Academy senior Maddie Smith added to her list of accomplishments by capturing the New England Interscholastic girls golf championship in runaway fashion. Despite playing the top players from the six-state region, Smith dominated the field by carding a 4-under 67 at the Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Baltic, Conn. The Memphis University-bound star won the tournament by six shots. The runner-up, Bishop Brady’s Madelyn Savary, finished with a 73. Smith is the younger sister of Morgan and…
Marcus Jones is in the middle of possibly his best season with the Patriots. On Tuesday, New England’s front office showed him how much it appreciates his efforts. The team announced that the 27-year-old cornerback has signed a contract extension. Terms of the deal were not released, but it will keep Jones from entering free agency this summer when his rookie deal was set to expire.A third-round draft pick by New England in 2022, he has totaled 36 tackles, two interceptions, nine pass breakups and a sack through eight games while being on the field for 76% of the defensive snaps. The…
New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers underwent successful surgery on Tuesday, marking a key step in his recovery from a devastating knee injury. The procedure repaired Nabers’s torn ACL and addressed related damage, providing hope for G-Men fans amid the team’s challenging campaign. Now, all eyes turn to Nabers’s timeline for a full return next year. Nabers’ injury occurred in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers, sidelining the 22-year-old star and robbing fans (momentarily) of an electric partnership between Nabers and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. Further testing on Nabers revealed not only a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)…

The Bruins have activated Hampus Lindholm (lower body) from injured reserve and sent Michael Callahan back to Providence prior to Tuesday’s game against the Islanders. While the B’s still have Jonathan Aspirot here to plug into Callahan’s spot if need be, it would seem that this means the return of Lindholm, who has played only three games this season. He left the second game of the season with the injury and returned to the lineup on October 18 in Colorado but had not played since then. He was skating and practicing with the team last week. Coming off a 7-2…
Marcus Jones is officially part of the Patriots’ future plans. The Patriots and Jones agreed to a three-year contract extension Tuesday, a source confirmed. The slot cornerback/All-Pro punt returner was set to become a free agent after the season. He’s now locked up through the 2028 season. Jones is having a Pro Bowl-caliber season as a slot cornerback this year and has also returned a punt for a touchdown. He said Monday that he would like to see the NFL add a category for slot cornerbacks in the Pro Bowl. “Yeah, I think it’s very important,” Jones said. “Our play…
After the Boston Red Sox were eliminated in their wild-card series by the New York Yankees, all eyes turned to third baseman Alex Bregman. With a major contract decision on his hands, it’s clear that the biggest question for the Red Sox this offseason is whether or not Bregman will spend more than one season with the team. Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston in free agency last offseason, but the deal had a player option after the first season that would allow the All-Star slugger to opt out and test free agency again if he wanted…
Celtics fans aren’t used to watching their team lose in October. In fact, prior to this season, Boston hadn’t started 0-3 since the 2013-14 campaign, when the team won just 25 games in Brad Stevens’ first year as head coach. So, perhaps it wasn’t surprising that a few fans (and media members) were wondering aloud if it was time to start talking about the “t-word” after the Celtics’ third straight loss in Detroit on Sunday afternoon. Then the Celtics walloped the Zion Williamson-less Pelicans by 32 points in New Orleans, and Jaylen Brown delivered a message he’s already mentioned several…
After all of the turnover they experienced this summer, the Celtics’ sluggish start to the new season should not have been surprising. That was Jaylen Brown’s message after Boston picked up its first win Monday night, 122-90 over the Pelicans in New Orleans, to snap a season-opening three-game losing streak. “It’s going to take some time,” Brown told reporters at the Smoothie King Center. “We lost four All-Stars last season between Al (Horford), Jrue (Holiday), Kristaps (Porzingis) and JT (Jayson Tatum) being out. Luke (Kornet) is an All-Star … in all of our hearts. But we lost some big-time players.…
