MATTAPOISETT — Joseph Case came into the territory of a familiar South Coast Conference foe, Old Rochester, and earned a 3-0 sweep for a crucial league victory Wednesday night. Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 27-25. Coming into the match, Case (17-1) came in on a 10-game winning streak, while entering its toughest week on the schedule with a matchup against defending Div. 5 champion Bourne on Monday, which the Cardinals won 3-2, and then two matchups with a perennial contender in the Bulldogs later in the week. “We’re really taking it one day at a time,” Case head coach Brendan…

A 13-point fourth-quarter lead against an undermanned Philadelphia 76ers squad wasn’t enough to earn the Celtics a win in their season opener. Boston’s first game after its seismic offseason overhaul ended in a 117-116 loss at TD Garden. Jaylen Brown and Derrick White – the only remaining starters from this team’s 61-win predecessor – each scored 25 points to lead the Celtics. New starting center Neemias Queta had 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and eight blocks before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Payton Pritchard and Anfernee Simons combined for 30 points, and both were on the court to…
One of the biggest mysteries of the Boston Celtics season is whether star forward Jayson Tatum will return from his Achilles injury. Tatum tore his Achilles tendon during the Eastern Conference semi-finals in May, an injury that usually requires about a year for a full recovery. Tatum expressed his desire to get back on the court this season, and according to WEEI’s Celtics writer Justin Turpin, he thinks Tatum could return by late February. “By February, nine months will have passed since his Achilles rupture,” Turpin wrote on Wednesday. “And if he’s fully cleared, with no further risk, there’s a…
Two Sundays ago in New Orleans, as Drake Maye was dissecting the Saints’ defense, a mic’d up Harold Landry III marveled at how the New England Patriots quarterback appeared to be in a “flow state.” “He has ultra instinct going full blast right now,” linebacker Christian Elliss added. That “flow state” is producing incredible results: Over his last four games (all Patriots wins), Maye has completed a ridiculous 78.1 percent of his passes for 959 yards with seven touchdown passes, zero interceptions and a 132.6 passer rating. He already has four games this season with a least 200 passing yards,…
FOXBORO — Put simply, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is connecting on passes he has no business completing. The young quarterback is off to an incredible start in his second NFL season, hitting on a league-leading 75.2% of his passing attempts. He currently has the highest CPOE (completion percentage above expected) of any quarterback in a single season, as charted by NFL Next Gen Stats since 2018, with a plus-10.3% mark. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel chalked it up to “special talent” while noting that Maye’s receivers have helped, as well. “Staying calm, the things that they’ve worked on and he’s…
BOSTON (AP) — The Little Ball of Hate still feels a lot of love for Boston.Brad Marchand struggled to hold back tears on the ice when the TD Garden crowd gave him a standing ovation Tuesday night during his first game back as a Bruins opponent. The 37-year-old forward tapped his heart, wiped his face and waved to the crowd as both teams banged their sticks against the ice and even the referee and linesmen clapped along.“I knew it was going to hit me the way it did. It was extremely touching,” Marchand said after the game, a 4-3 Panthers victory in…
The New England Patriots took down the Tennessee Titans 31-13 in Week 7 to earn their fourth straight win, pushing their record to 5-2 on the season. Per usual, the team was powered to victory by second-year quarterback Drake Maye. In what is becoming a recurring theme, Maye looked like a superstar against the Titans. He completed 21 of his 23 pass attempts for 222 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for another 62 yards on eight carries. The Pats had high hopes for Maye entering the season, but nobody expected him to be playing at an MVP-caliber level…
2025 In a Discarded-On-The-Dugout -Floor NutshellFacing injury, rehab, and a crowded roster, Masataka Yoshida had to wait as long as possible every step of the way in 2025.In 20 games during September, Masa came to life, hitting .333/.351/.486. The batting average might be a bit fluky but his OBP was .338 and.349 in 2023 and 2024, respectively, so .351 isn’t totally out of bounds. This was the first time we really saw Yoshida fully healthy and up to game speed in over a year.Entering 2025, the DH had offseason shoulder surgery which was apparently part of the reason for why…
The most recent loss to the Florida Panthers was difficult for all the Bruins, what with the winning goal against coming on a fluke bounce with 25.7 seconds. But it was an especially difficult night for Mason Lohrei. In the 4-3 loss, the lanky defenseman wasn’t involved in the GWG but he had a big hand in two of the goals. He knew it. His coach certainly knew it – and voiced it in the post-game press conference as well. On the first goal in question, Lohrei could have gotten a little more help from Tanner Jeannot in tying up…
It was an uncomfortable sight for Celtics fans: Marcus Smart in Laker gold and purple, squaring off against Al Horford in his fresh Warriors uniform. The former Boston fan favorites debuted for their new Western Conference teams late Tuesday night, coming off their respective benches in the Warriors’ 119-109 victory at Crypto.com Arena. Smart, who’s bounced from Memphis to Washington and now to Los Angeles since being traded by the Celtics in 2023, was the more impactful of the two. The rugged point guard spent much of his 23 minutes cannonballing around the court in pursuit of Stephen Curry. His…
