FOXBORO — The Patriots’ preseason opener at Gillette Stadium on Friday is the kind of game that requires a thorough explanation of the context surrounding the game prior to any kind of after-the-fact dissection. Their opponents, the Commanders, sat a whopping 30 regulars. Their top two quarterbacks didn’t take a snap. The Patriots, meanwhile, wanted to play their healthy starters. Not for long. But long enough to help them jump out to a multi-score lead.  Therefore, Friday night’s 48-18 bludgeoning may not be all that it seems. But that’s not to suggest there weren’t meaningful takeaways as the seats emptied and…

FOXBORO — It wasn’t Efton Chism’s hands or quickness that stood out to Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel after Friday night’s 48-18 preseason win over the Commanders. It was, somewhat ironically, the undersized slot receiver’s play strength. Chism, who’s 5-foot-10, 198 pounds, caught six passes on eight targets for 50 yards with a touchdown in his preseason debut. “I think his play strength stood out to me, just from the sideline,” Vrabel said. “I think it’s the way he blocks, his ability to catch the ball in traffic. The ball was basically tipped or bobbled coming out of Ben’s [Wooldridge]…

The Boston Red Sox beat the San Diego Padres late on Friday night, or early on Saturday morning for fans on the East Coast. The Red Sox offense broke out in the fourth inning, scoring four off the bats of Masataka Yoshida and Wilyer Abreu, as well as a throwing error by Padres starting pitcher Nick Pivetta. Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman added another run to the score in the fifth inning, and Connor Wong doubled to drive in three runs in the eighth. Yoshida capped it off with a 2-run home run in the ninth inning to end…

FOXBORO — Versatility will be key as the Patriots whittle down their wide receiver corps at 53-man roster cuts. Javon Baker, a 2024 fourth-round pick, got out to a strong start in Friday’s preseason game, proving that he can be more than just a pass-catcher for the Patriots. Baker lined up across from Brenden Schooler as a top gunner on the Patriots’ punt team and ended the 48-18 win with two special teams tackles. “I think that that’s fantastic,” head coach Mike Vrabel said when asked about players who are trying to contribute in more than one phase. “We’ve got…

Going into Friday night’s game, I fully expected the Red Sox to drop this one. Walker Buehler has been less than inspiring, and Nick Pivetta has been lights out at home this season. Apparently, Buehler’s hatred for the Padres was greater than Pivetta’s desire for vengeance against the Red Sox. The Red Sox grabbed a four-run lead in the fourth inning after Wilyer Abreu sent a ball to Jupiter, and they never looked back.Much like in the 1964 classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the misfit toys came up big when they were needed most. Walker Buehler, Connor Wong, and Masataka…

FOXBORO — Patriots quarterback Drake Maye thought he was about to take the field for his first drive of the season Friday night, then had to stop. His rookie teammate, TreVeyon Henderson, returned the opening kickoff of the Pats’ preseason opener 100 yards for a touchdown in just 12 seconds. That sparked an eventual 48-18 win for the Pats, but the extra time it gave Maye didn’t settle him down any. The Patriots’ starting quarterback lost a fumble at the end of his opening drive, a third-down pass play he tried to extend past its expiration date. Maye was about…

The Boston Red Sox have recently begun reaping the rewards of identifying and selecting elite amateur players this season thanks to breakout performances from talented rookies such as outfielder Roman Anthony and infielder Marcelo Mayer. With Anthony batting .276 over his first 47 Major League games and quickly establishing himself as the face of the franchise, the Red Sox’s young core of Anthony, Mayer, Ceddanne Rafaela and Bryan Bello has returned a sense of optimism and enthusiasm to Red Sox Nation that’s been sorely lacking for much of the last half-decade. That said, the Red Sox farm system has another…

Tom Brady was the “true heartbeat” of the Patriots dynasty, said team owner Robert Kraft, and for that, a statue was unveiled in his honor Friday evening outside Gillette Stadium. He won’t be forgotten now. It was a perfect night for the unveiling. (Stuart Cahill/Boston Herald) Robert Kraft laughs with his son, Jonathan, as the Patriots unveil a statue of Tom Brady. BOSTON (WHDH) – Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla signed a multi-year contract extension with the team. Mazzulla helped lead the team to the 2024 NBA Championship and the team has won nearly 75 percent of their games in his three years as head coach. The team did not disclose the length of the extension. President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens called Mazzulla a “gifted leader” and said he is excited to keep the coach with the Celtics for years to come. (Copyright (c) 2024 Sunbeam Television.
