WINCHESTER– It is always stressful, playing in your first varsity game. It would be easy to back down under the pressure. Yet, when her team needed her most, Audrey Houllahan made her moment count. The Winchester girls’ soccer freshman sniped the game-clinching goal in the 69th minute Tuesday, delivering the Red and Black a thrilling 1-0 victory over Wilmington to open their fall campaign. “It felt really good,” Houllahan said afterward. “To make it, then win a game (was crazy).” It was a new start, and in more ways than one for the Red and Black (1-0). With 11 underclassmen…

The Boston Red Sox minor league system has produced some impressive young talent over the last half-decade, with former top prospects Bryan Bello, Cedanne Rafaela, Roman Anthony and Payton Tolle all expected to be key contributors for the Red Sox over the final weeks of the regular season. Taking into consideration that Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell will also return to the Major League club at some point next season, the Red Sox’s talented young core looks the part of a group capable of carrying the team into a decade of competitive baseball. With the Red Sox recently churning out…
When the University of North Carolina hired Bill Belichick to become the school’s new head football coach last December, the expectations and praise were high. That is to be expected. This was A Big Deal™. The local media might have also gotten caught up in the moment as well. That, too, was more or less to be expected. Because, again, this was A Big Deal™. And though Belichick’s $10 million salary raised some eyebrows, and though the spring and summer may have brought some less-than-excellent attention to Belichick and — by extension — the university, it was all going to…
The Red Sox and visiting Cleveland Guardians play their second of a three-game set Tuesday night at Fenway Park. With the calendar flipping to September on Monday, the Red Sox are back to starting weeknight home games at 6:45 p.m. ET for the remainder of the season. The Red Sox announced last winter that weekday home games would start at 6:45 p.m. (25 minutes earlier) in April, May and September. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s high-point moment in its first game under coach Bill Belichick came early.A festive pregame atmosphere led to a roar from the crowd at kickoff. And a season-opening drive moved at a crisp pace to the end zone. After that, well, Monday night’s hyped-up debut turned into a romp by TCU — along with a reminder that even an NFL icon with six Super Bowl titles as a head coach can’t just magically turn the Tar Heels into winners after decades of also-ran status.“We played competitively but then just couldn’t sustain it,” Belichick said in a familiar…
So what’s the deal with Wilyer Abreu? When the outfielder first strained his right calf two weeks ago, there was initially some hope that it was minor enough that he wouldn’t have to go on the IL at all. But not only did he go on the 10-day IL, he’s still on it, more than 10 days later. Abreu is staring a “running progression,” but this isn’t what I love to hear from Alex Cora: “Are we concerned? Yes and no. He’ll be back at one point, but I think it’s been longer than expected.” (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)I’ll say…
Head coach Mike Vrabel expects wide receiver Stefon Diggs to be ready for the Patriots’ Week 1 matchup with the Raiders. It seems the team is still in wait-and-see mode with cornerback Christian Gonzalez, however. Vrabel spoke Tuesday morning on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” about Diggs’ Week 1 availability. “As of today, he’ll be out there,” Vrabel said on the radio. Diggs avoided the PUP list entering training camp despite tearing his ACL in late October. He’s been a full participant in practice throughout the summer and is expected to be quarterback Drake Maye’s top pass-catching target as an…
Perhaps no other player for the Boston Red Sox has improved as much as Ceddanne Rafaela during the 2025 season. The 24-year-old finished his 2024 rookie campaign with 15 home runs, 75 RBIs and 19 steals, but also 10 times caught stealing, a rough 151 to 15 strikeout to walk ratio and a meager .246/.274/.390 slash line. Rafaela also committed 12 errors last season while primarily splitting time between centerfield and shortstop. The versatile youngster has already matched his home run and stolen bases totals from 2024 with just five times being caught stealing, an improved .248/.293/.420 triple slash and…

FOXBORO — Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez did not practice Monday, and his status for this weekend’s season opener seems to be increasingly in doubt. Gonzalez suffered a left hamstring injury during a training camp practice on July 28, and hasn’t practiced since. Initial reporting suggested the Patriots were targeting a Week 1 return for Gonzalez, though after missing Monday’s session he has just three practices left this week to prepare for the Raiders. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel addresses Gonzalez’s status before Monday’s practice. “Well, it just hasn’t gone — again, (Gonzalez)’s working hard,” Vrabel said. “Whether it’s, say, one injury…
