Football has returned. The Patriots reported for training camp this week, and practices officially begin Wednesday morning. Before camp kicks off, let’s answer reader questions in our latest Patriots mailbag. @patsplanetmedia: Who’s your most under the radar player to watch going into camp? Most under-the-radar is tough to gauge, but I’ll say running back Antonio Gibson. He’s most likely safe for a roster spot. He was the Patriots’ best running back last season, outperforming Rhamondre Stevenson, who experienced a down year coming off of a contract extension. But the Patriots did select TreVeyon Henderson in the second round and signed…
The Boston Red Sox salvaged the final game of a three-game weekend series against the Chicago Cubs with a late-game rally that produced a 6-1 victory. Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet improved to 11-4 after hurling six innings of one-run ball and striking out five against a very tough Cubs’ offense. While Crochet wasn’t exactly his dominant self during his first start following the All-Star break, Cubs’ rookie starting pitcher Cade Horton had nothing but praise for the Red Sox ace when he spoke to the media after Sunday’s game. “When you got Crochet over there, you know there’s probably…
The Boston Red Sox found a new way to lose in devastating fashion in Monday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. It was a 2-2 game when Red Sox reliever Jordan Hicks, acquired as part of the Rafael Devers deal, took the mound in the bottom of the 10th inning at Citizens Bank Park. The hard-throwing right-hander was all over the place, walking Otto Kemp on four pitches before his wild pitch to Max Kepler allowed runners to advance to second and third base. He intentionally walked Kepler to load the bases with no outs. Edmundo Sosa was next to…
By JANIE McCAULEY SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved therapy bunny named Alex The Great, who provided snuggles and comfort from ballparks to NBA arenas, airports, farmers markets and even Easter egg hunts and NASCAR races, has died. He was 4. A floppy-eared Flemish giant who was larger than life in both size and spirit, Alex suffered complications from cancer treatment and died early Monday, his owners said. The rabbit had undergone care at the renowned UC Davis Veterinary Hospital in recent days. Alex appeared June 4 sporting his signature cap for Padres-Giants at Oracle Park. At 4 months old,…
Rudy Fernandez is a Spanish basketball institution. Over a professional career that spanned more than two decades, Fernandez made 366 appearances for Spain’s national team, more than any player in history. He also was a mainstay with Real Madrid, winning seven domestic championships and three EuroLeague titles over a 13-year tenure following stints with the Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets. As one of Europe’s most successful clubs, Real Madrid often boasts a roster stocked with NBA alumni. In the 40-year-old Fernandez’s final pro season (2023-24), his teammates included Mario Hezojna, Facundo Campazzo and ex-Celtic Guerschon Yabusele. They also featured…
Only two games in MLB history have ended on a catcher’s interference call. The first was more than 50 years ago on Aug. 1, 1971, in a game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds. The second was on Monday night, when the Boston Red Sox suffered a 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The walk-off catcher’s interference happened after Jordan Hicks loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the 10th inning. With the count at 1-2 on Edmundo Sosa, Hicks threw a slider off the plate that Sosa attempted to swing…
You never know when you’re about to see the thing you’ve never seen before. Ten minutes ago, I had no idea I’d be typing this, but here we are: The Red Sox lost on a walk-off catcher’s interference call with the bases loaded in the 10th inning. Tom Caron is apopleptic about them losing all 7 extra inning games on the road rn, but I’m stuck on the catcher’s interference thing if we’re being honest. Three Studs Walker Buehler When he has it he has it and when he doesn’t he doesn’t, and tonight he had it. I sold his…
