Wilyer Abreu was removed from Sunday’s game after pulling up with a tight calf while scoring on a sacrifice fly, and after the game the Red Sox expressed hope the outfielder could avoid a stint on the injured list. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Abreu is feeling better, but that he’s still not out of the woods. “Willy’s sore, tight, we’ll take it day by day, a lot of improvement from last night, so we feel positive on that one,” Cora said. “We’ll see what happens, it doesn’t mean it won’t go on the IL, but we’ll…

The Boston Red Sox are coming down the homestretch of the 2025 campaign, and it’s clear that their main goal right now is to find their way into the playoffs. And yet, you can’t help but feel like Alex Bregman’s contract situation is continuing to linger over the team. Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox in free agency over the offseason, but he has a player option in his deal that allows him to opt out and test the open market again next offseason should he want to. Considering how Bregman is putting together an…

FOXBORO — The Patriots are placing defensive tackle Isaiah Iton on injured reserve, executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf announced Monday morning. Iton, a training camp standout and depth chart riser, injured his hip in Saturday’s preseason win over the Vikings. The Patriots signed wide receiver Phil Lutz to fill his spot on the 90-man roster. Lutz played collegiately at Delaware and Tufts and participated in Patriots rookie minicamp. Additionally, head coach Mike Vrabel announced Monday that cornerback Christian Gonzalez and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne will not practice this week or play in Thursday’s preseason game against the…

The Patriots are just over a week away from roster cuts with one more preseason game to go. Before the Patriots take on the Giants in their preseason finale, let’s take another crack at a 53-man roster projection. QUARTERBACK (2) Drake Maye, Joshua Dobbs Ben Wooldridge has shown promise throughout the summer, but it seems unlikely that another team would claim him if the Patriots elect to waive him at roster cuts. Maye is the unquestioned starter. It would still be worth checking the waiver wire to see if another quarterback shakes free who could compete with Dobbs for the…

MINNEAPOLIS — Milton Williams stood inside the visitor’s locker room at U.S. Bank Stadium, one stall down from fellow defensive tackle Christian Barmore, and thought about the future.  Williams played sparingly in the Patriots’ 20-12 preseason win over the Vikings, and Barmore didn’t play at all. But the big-ticket free agent signed this offseason has seen enough this summer to have a sense for what kind of impact they can make as a pair when the regular season begins. “I already told him,” Williams said, “it’s gonna be how it was last year with me and [Eagles defensive tackle] Jalen…

The Boston Red Sox reportedly have a new first baseman. Late Sunday night, multiple reports indicated the Red Sox were finalizing a deal with Nathaniel Lowe, who was released by the Washington Nationals last week. The move isn’t surprising, as numerous rumors connected Boston to Lowe after his release. Chris Cotillo of MassLive suggested Lowe could be in the lineup Monday night when the Red Sox begin a two-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles. “The Red Sox are close to adding a veteran first baseman for the home stretch,” Cotillo wrote. “Boston is finalizing a contract with Nathaniel Lowe…

For a second straight week, one team sat virtually all of its starters in a Patriots preseason game, and that team was not the Patriots. Mike Vrabel trotted out his top offense and defense for a few series each Saturday in Minnesota, then sent in all available backups to wrap up a close win. Once again, they did the job. Here are the Herald’s film observations from the Pats’ 20-12 triumph in the Twin Cities: Studs WR Efton Chism III The undrafted rookie can stop renting, and start looking for houses around Foxboro. His performance — six catches, 71 yards…

We can’t even help ourselves. This all starts yesterday with Isaiah Campbell unable to seal the game easily in the 9th, forcing Aroldis Chapman to come into the game and finish it out. That left him “unavailable” today in a game they needed him even more so in the final frame. I’m just feeling a little lost on the decision though, why would you not want to just get this game done and dusted with a fantastic closer? Really irked by the domino effect here.My bigger concern is the offense cooling off. Aside from Duran’s double and Abreu’s homer, no…
