With high school football practices set to kick off Friday, there are always a slew of story lines to follow during the regular season. Here are a bunch of them that the Boston Herald will be keeping its eyes on. • Rob DiLoreto returns for a second tour of duty as the Everett football coach. Here’s hoping that the hierarchy does their job and allows DiLoreto to do his thing in the proper manner. Up north, Acton-Boxboro turns to Billy Waters in hopes of turning a program around which has struggled in recent years. • Needham was one of the…

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The top quarterbacks in last year’s NFL draft accounted for six of the top 12 picks, and they had a wide range of results in their rookie year, from award-winning to not applicable.Drake Maye, though picked as an injury replacement for the Pro Bowl, had a bumpy debut while the New England Patriots went 4-13. J.J. McCarthy didn’t play at all for the Minnesota Vikings, after he was sidelined by a torn meniscus in his right knee. The bright side for both players was plenty of room for real progress, which became a bit easier to envision this week during…

Stefon Diggs is feeling good. The Patriots don’t want him to get too carried away, it seems. The new Patriots wideout has been coming along well this offseason, however he did not play in the preseason opener against the Washington Commanders. Head coach Mike Vrabel declared it a coach’s decision, but it was noteworthy since other starters, including Drake Maye, played. But in an appearance Thursday on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, Patriots safety-turned-NFL analyst Devin McCourty shared some insight he gained from Diggs in a conversation they had last week. “We talked to him after practice and he was…

With Drake Maye, the New England Patriots will not get themselves another Tom Brady. Obviously. That shouldn’t be the goal for anybody, because it’s never going to happen. Yet as the second-year quarterback enters a significant season in his growth and development, Tom E. Curran is comfortable already saying that Maye will turn out better than 1993 No. 1 overall pick Drew Bledsoe. “You scoff? You don’t think Bledsoe was that great?” Curran said on Quick Slants. “For the first five and a half seasons, there wasn’t really a young quarterback in the league that you’d rather have than Drew.…

FOXBORO — Playoff hopes may be dimming, but the New England Revolution is not writing off the 2025 season as its front office presses on with an active summer transfer window. On Thursday morning, the club opened up more space on its roster by waiving attackers Luis Diaz and Maxi Urruti. The moves come as the Revolution are increasingly linked with Dor Turgeman, a 21 year old striker who has eight caps for the Israel national team and 32 goals in 113 appearances for Maccabi Tel Aviv across all competitions. The Revolution may face stiff competition for Turgeman, with reports…

EAGAN, Minn. — Jaylinn Hawkins admitted the Patriots had a rough joint practice Thursday. The defense allowed several touchdowns to the Vikings, almost a dozen consecutive completions and generated minimal pressure. After practice, Hawkins walked off the field and into a Mike Vrabel-led team huddle. He believed again. Vrabel’s messaging, Hawkins said, has resonated with him throughout the summer as the Patriots try once more to overhaul their culture. It’s been a simple message lately, coming off a strong week of practices and a preseason blowout of the Commanders: it’s not good enough. Keep going. “We’ve never arrived. So, live…

What position will Kristian Campbell play for the Boston Red Sox upon his MLB return? The answer is first base, which is why some fans were confused when Campbell was slated to start in left field for the Worcester Red Sox on Thursday night. Per @SoxProspects, “It is the first time (Campbell has) played a position other than 1B or 2B since being optioned on June 20.” Is Boston’s leadership suddenly having second thoughts about Campbell playing first base, despite Campbell’s increasing level of comfort at the position? That answer is no.  Following the Campbell left field announcement on Thursday…

After a disappointing but not quite disastrous road trip, the outlook among Red Sox fans has slipped slightly over the past few days. While a 2-4 southwestern swing to San Diego and Houston won’t kill you, the Sox probably should have found a way to come home 3-3 given there were loses that involved a big Roman Antony double to tie the game in the ninth inning on Saturday and a Garrett Crochet start in which they scored six runs on Monday. If they managed to grab just one of those games, we all probably feel a little better about…

EAGAN, Minn. — Patriots left tackle Will Campbell continues to ride the rookie rollercoaster as he enters the fourth week of his first training camp. Campbell labored in Thursday’s joint practice against the Vikings, allowing two would-be sacks and a pressure to Vikings Pro Bowl defensive end Jonathan Greenard during 11-on-11 drills. He also appeared to be flagged for a false start during a two-minute drill. Still, Greenard, who’s put together back-to-back double-digit sack campaigns, believes in Campbell’s future. “He’s gonna be a good tackle. I think just with repetition and reps, it’s gonna be really good,” Greenard told the…

By DAN GREENSPAN OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones credited an experimental trial drug for successfully treating advanced melanoma as he disclosed his cancer diagnosis publicly for the first time. Jones revealed his illness in a documentary series, “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys,” which will debut on Netflix next week. The 82-year-old Jones then told The Dallas Morning News how he was initially diagnosed in June 2010 and underwent two surgeries on his lung and two on his lymph nodes over the next 10 years after skin cancer cells metastasized to other parts of his…
