The Red Sox will utilize an opener for the first time this season in tonight’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds. Left-hander Brennan Bernardino will take the mound to start the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader. Brayan Bello, Wednesday night’s originally scheduled starter, pitched five innings in the early game before Aroldis Chapman closed things out. As a result the Red Sox have a full bullpen at their disposal heading into Thursday’s off-day. Right-hander Cooper Criswell has also been added to the roster as the 27th man and will be available as a bulk reliever. Cincinnati will start right-hander Nick…

The Boston Bruins announced nine signings and one trade on Day 1 of NHL free agency. They were among the league’s busiest teams. But did any of these moves make the team significantly better? Probably not. Instead of chasing high-end talent with goal-scoring ability — the Bruins were one of the league’s worst offensive teams last season — general manager Don Sweeney added a bunch of bottom-six forwards with limited scoring potential. The Viktor Arvidsson trade with the Oilers made sense, especially when the cost was only a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. Many of the other pickups were puzzling, though.…
When Tuesday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds was suspended due to rain, the Red Sox were winning 2-1 heading into the top of the fourth inning. Richard Fitts had thrown the first three innings for Boston. Now the club is hoping Brayan Bello can finish up the remaining six. Bello will take the hill when the game resumes on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said pregame that ideally Bello will finish the game, allowing the club to piece together a bullpen game for the regularly scheduled series finale at 7:10 p.m. Cora also said “there’s…
After a slew of signings on Tuesday, it is fair for Bruins’ fans to ask whether their team is any better than it was just before they held their fire sale at the trade deadline. On paper, it would be hard to answer in the affirmative But if there was one thing that GM Don Sweeney wanted to accomplish on Tuesday with NHL free agency, it was to make his team more competitive, first when training camp opens in September and then when the roster – whoever makes it – goes to battle against other teams in October. Time will…
The Red Sox and NESN did everything they could to recreate the atmosphere of the 1975 World Series tonight. From the two teams on the field, to Jahmai Webster’s snazzy outfit, to interviews with former players, and even a retro graphics package. But unfortunately, another key feature of the 1975 World Series also showed up tonight: Bad weather. 50 years ago, it was a three day nor’easter that created a five day gap between Game 5 and the legendary Game 6 of that series, and tonight it was a repetitive round of summer thunderstorms associated with stationary front. Before the…
The Boston Celtics spent the last few weeks figuring out how to cut salary and balance their books. But that doesn’t mean president of basketball operations Brad Stevens won’t show at least some interest in star players if they become available. That apparently seems to be the case as it relates to Damian Lillard, who reportedly will be bought out by the Milwaukee Bucks and free to sign elsewhere. “Not surprisingly, league sources say Lillard received calls from several contending teams quickly after the news of his Bucks’ ending broke,” The Athletic’s Eric Nehm, Sam Amick and Joe Vardon wrote…
The Hub of the Universe has spun off its axis. Boston has gone Minor League. These days, the City of Champions can’t even land a WNBA franchise. The list of the departed in 2025 includes the following: Brad Marchand. David Andrews. Raffy Devers. Kristaps Porzingis. Jrue Holiday. Luke Kornet. (That last one really hurts.) 7 rings out the door. Beantown frowns at each breaking news sounder on talk radio or ESPN insider post on social media. Who’s next? Jaylen Brown? Derrick White? Aroldis Chapman? Alex Cora? (We should be so lucky.) The Red Sox and Celtics have pruned more than $500 million in…
