Fortunes can change quickly in the modern NBA. Just ask the Celtics. At this time last year, Boston had its sights on back-to-back championships after winning it all in 2024 and returning its entire star-studded rotation. Fast forward 12 months, and half of that rotation is gone, sacrificed at the altar of the second-apron overlords. Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday were traded for luxury tax relief. Luke Kornet got paid in free agency. Al Horford remained unsigned as of Monday, but the Celtics are not expecting him back. Most of the players brought in to replace them are career backups. Add…

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Antonio Gibson burst through the Miami Dolphins’ coverage unit on a kick return and dived into the end zone while New England coach Mike Vrabel excitedly chased him almost the entire way down the Patriots’ sideline.Gibson, whose 90-yard score helped the Patriots beat the Dolphins 33-27 on Sunday for Vrabel’s first win as coach of the team he starred for as a player, had no idea Vrabel was running nearly in step with him. When he found out after the game, he was ready with a zinger.“If he almost caught me then I need to run faster,”…
In the NFL, there is a canyon-sized gap between “win with” and “win because of” at the quarterback position. On Sunday in Miami, in a 33-27 win over the Dolphins, Drake Maye was the latter for the Patriots. Maye completed 19 of his 23 attempts for 230 yards and two touchdowns, compiling a quarterback rating of 137.3. He also ran 10 times for 31 yards, including a short touchdown run that gave the Patriots the lead early in the third quarter. It was Maye’s best and most efficient game since being taken with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft,…
Michael Chiklis cheerfully acknowledges “The Senior” easily ranks as the most demanding role of his four-decades and counting career. “The Senior” is such a fantastic story if it wasn’t true, who would believe it. At 59, Mike Flynt returned to his Alpine, Texas, college where he didn’t finish senior year, and with that year of eligibility still valid, played on the football team. Observed Chiklis, 62, “This is a true story — and Mike was right there, sitting off camera while I did it all. “That’s daunting. Fortunately, I realized he just wanted to be there because he was wide-eyed about…
Mike Vrabel and the New England Patriots say they remain confident in Andy Borregales, but the totality of Sunday suggested that, at least in the short term, they might’ve made the wrong decision at kicker. The Patriots beat the Miami Dolphins 33-27, but the win marked the continuation of kicking woes. Borregales missed the extra point try on both of the Patriots’ first two scores. A 22-yard field goal with just under two minutes left in the first half was his first time putting points on the board. He came through later in a hugely important spot, knocking down a…
There will not be a sweep at the hands of the Evil Empire. Garrett Crochet got down and dirty, striking out 12 Yankees en route to an extremely necessary victory. A six run first inning hopefully sets the tone for the rest of the season: score early and hold onto the lead. Less drama. It keeps the Sox in the second Wild Card spot, which is as neutral as you can get for the weekend. With the [insert NorCal city here] Athletics rolling into town, this is another critical series to not worry about anybody else and rack up some wins.Still,…
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Harold Landry knew. Digging in next to defensive tackle Milton Williams before Miami’s final offensive play Sunday, Landry saw the ball snap and then a blur. That blur was Williams, who had fired off the line a split-second before any other lineman. At that point, Landry figured he had Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa dead to rights. “He beat me off the ball,” said Landry, the Patriots’ captain and top edge rusher. “I knew something good was about to happen for him. And once he smoked the (offensive) guard, I knew it was gonna be a sack.”…
This weekend didn’t go the way the Red Sox hoped, and through the first two games it seemed like every time they had a chance to make something happen, the club let it slip away. But Sunday the Red Sox only needed about 20 minutes to flip the script on their rivals. The Red Sox ambushed the New York Yankees in Sunday night’s series finale, ripping off six runs in the first inning en route to a 6-4 win. The Boston bats opened with five straight hits off Yankees starter Will Warren, and former Yankees prospect Carlos Narvaez capped off…
The New England Patriots defeated the Miami Dolphins 33-27 on Sunday, marking the first time in 46 games that the Patriots scored at least 30 points in a contest. New England last reached the 30-point mark in October 2022. In that game, backup quarterback Bailey Zappe threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Patriots to a 38-15 victory over the Cleveland Browns. The Patriots were scoring in all different kinds of ways on Sunday. Quarterback Drake Maye had an impressive game, throwing for two touchdowns, plus rushing for one. The special teams also played a vital role, with…
