By LARRY LAGE MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — Barry Sanders was not motivated by statistics during his Pro Football Hall of Fame career, memorably opting to retire instead of playing one more season to likely break the NFL’s all-time rushing record. “It never was a driver for me,” Sanders said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press. Nearly 15 months after he had a heart attack, cholesterol numbers have become critically important for the Detroit Lions great. Sanders is hoping to encourage people to talk with their physicians about their cardiovascular health. “I hope that they take advantage of…

Coming off their its Div. 1 state title in 20 years, Wellesley is poised to make another run with coach Dave Wainwright at the helm. The Raiders may have graduated eight seniors, but they still have several returners to their varsity squad and are always tested with a tough Bay State Conference schedule. “It’s challenging,” said Wainwright about having to regroup this offseason with only four rising juniors. “So many responsibilities that need to be filled and those responsibilities were relegated to underclassmen.” Now, senior captains Emily Burnham, goalie Cam Walsh, versatile midfielder Caroline Keye and Ellery Gerhart are the…
The New England Patriots are looking to get back on track against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2. Mike Vrabel’s squad didn’t get off to the best start during their season-opening loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, though that matchup did provide some insight into what exactly they’ll need to correct heading into their first divisional matchup on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. I’ve got seven specific storylines to keep your eye on: 1. WEATHER WORRIES The Patriots have historically struggled during early-season games down south, dropping three of their last four games played at Hard Rock Stadium in September…
We’ve talked about Alex Bregman’s forthcoming opt-out about as much as we’ve talked about his play on the field lately. Following last week’s report from Jeff Passan that Bregman is likely to opt-out of his contract at the end of the season, Sox CEO Sam Kennedy was asked about it during a radio appearance today and expressed surprise, saying that the team hasn’t discussed anything with Bregman beyond this season, but that “he wants to be here [and] we want him to be here.” So there you go: everyone loves it here in our fair Commonwealth. And it’s not surprising that…
Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week during the NFL regular season, I will drop five Patriots-related thoughts on Friday to recap the week that was in Foxboro and look ahead to kickoff. Ready, set, football. 1. Don’t panic It’s Sept. 12. We are 6% of the way through the NFL regular season; the equivalent of less than three series into the MLB calendar and five games into an NBA season. So, barring a total collapse Sunday in Miami — and I am talking about an epic disaster involving a serious Drake Maye injury — any ongoing panic over the…

After getting blown out in the first two games of their series with the Detroit Tigers, the New York Yankees bounced back with a 9-3 victory in Thursday’s series finale at Yankee Stadium. There’s not much time to celebrate for the Yankees, however, who have a pivotal three-game series with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park this weekend. After Thursday’s game, Aaron Boone reflected on New York’s upcoming trip to Boston, which will be the final regular-season series between the two rivals. “Excited to get up to Boston,” Boone said. “Obviously, they’ve had our number this year. They’ve had…

Patriots outside linebacker Harold Landry and starting right tackle Morgan Moses returned to practice Thursday after sitting out Wednesday. Both players were limited by new foot injuries. Star cornerback Christian Gonzalez (hamstring) and defensive lineman Keion White (illness) were absent again, putting their respective availability in serious doubt for Sunday. Gonzalez has not practiced in six and a half weeks due to the same hamstring injury he suffered in training camp. White played 29 snaps in the season opener last Sunday. Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte (shoulder), linebackers Christian Elliss (shoulder) and Marte Mapu (neck) and defensive tackle Christian Barmore (not…
