CAMBRIDGE – Several people asked Hamilton-Wenham girls tennis head coach Joe Maher in the preseason if the program – which turned over a significant portion of its roster – would be going for a fourth straight title. He wouldn’t even answer it because of the pressure that comes with it. Pressure didn’t seem to bother the fourth-seeded Generals much at all Sunday afternoon at MIT’s DuPont Tennis Courts, though, securing a rare four-peat with a 5-0 win over No. 6 Manchester Essex in the Div. 4 state final. Every match but No. 1 doubles was won in straight sets, overpowering…

The Indiana Pacers are in serious trouble. The Pacers suffered a 120-109 Game 5 loss to the Thunder on Monday night, allowing Oklahoma City to take a 3-2 lead in the NBA Finals. Worse yet, star guard Tyrese Haliburton, Indiana’s best player, suffered a leg injury during the first quarter and, although he returned later in the game, clearly was limited. More bad news arrived Tuesday when ESPN insider Shams Charania reported that Haliburton suffered a right calf strain and will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. Charania hadn’t offered additional details at the time of…

The Red Sox traded Rafael Devers because they felt he wasn’t willing to do whatever it takes to win. Though that wasn’t said explicitly, Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made that abundantly clear over the course of their 40-minute press conference addressing the stunning trade. When asked why they felt it was necessary to abruptly deal one of the most productive hitters in team history, the pair repeatedly cited the team’s culture and the need to foster a winning environment. Left unsaid was the fact they felt Devers had become detrimental to those efforts.…
Craig Breslow is feeling the heat following Sunday’s blockbuster Rafael Devers trade. But he’s not the only front office executive facing scrutiny as the MLB trade deadline approaches. That’s according to ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney, who assembled a list of seven executives with the most at stake ahead of the July 31 deadline. Included on his list are three former members of the Red Sox front office. Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen held the same title with the Red Sox in 2015 and 2016 under team president Dave Dombrowski. “Hazen will have a lot of say about what…
Roman Anthony has officially arrived. Anthony, the Boston Red Sox’ No. 1 prospect and the top-ranked prospect in MLB, recorded his first career home run during Monday’s game against the Seattle Mariners. He took Logan Gilbert deep to right-center field for a solo shot in the first inning: Anthony’s first career homer came in the Red Sox’ first game without Rafael Devers, who was traded to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. Ironically, Devers also hit his first MLB homer in Seattle. With Devers out of the picture, Anthony will be counted on to carry a heavy load in the…
At about 11 p.m. on Tuesday night, Brad Marchand could very well be lifting the Stanley Cup over his head down at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida. If in fact the Florida Panthers are able to finish off the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 of the Cup final, it should come as no surprise to the Bruins’ fans or GM Don Sweeney, who dealt the former Bruin captain to the defending champions with the idea that he’d have a good chance of winning another ring. Sweeney did Marchand a well-deserved solid. But what is surprising is that Marchand has…
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox thought they would be better off with a happy clubhouse than a disgruntled Rafael Devers.A day after trading their erstwhile third baseman to the San Francisco Giants, Red Sox President Sam Kennedy told reporters on Monday night that Devers’ refusal to change positions made it untenable for him to remain with the team.“In terms of what was missing, it just was that alignment in terms of what we felt we needed from him that would be in the absolute best interest of the ball club,” Kennedy said. “That’s a non-starter for us. We have to…
