I threw out my back and its two already-herniated discs less than an hour before the game, so I was already in agony. Then the game began and I immediately felt even worse. With the game’s very first batter, Romy Gonzalez committed an error. This was a baserunner who came around to score (after a single and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out). With the Pirates owning MLB’s worst offense, this felt inexplicable, especially to start the game this way.Dustin May did pitch an impressive second: 3K on 11 pitches. And Narváez tied it up with a swing for…

Four months from now, the Patriots will be in one of two places. No. 1: skipping into the playoffs with nothing to lose. No. 2: playing for nothing while they prepare for Year 2 under Mike Vrabel. Oddsmakers currently cast the Patriots as a likely non-playoff team, a reasonable assessment for a franchise coming off consecutive 4-13 seasons and four losing seasons in five years. Their over-under win total sits at a mediocre 8.5. On the other hand, the fastest way to fuel a surprise playoff run is to do exactly what the Patriots did by upgrading all of their…

On the heels of a disappointing series loss to the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday evening, the Red Sox made a move to shore up their bullpen for at least another season. As first reported by BBWAA reporter Francys Romero and confirmed by the Herald, the Red Sox and veteran closer Aroldis Chapman are in agreement on a contract extension for the ’26 season, with an option for ’27 as well. Chapman, in his 16th big-league season, is having a career year in Boston. At 37 years old, he owns a personal-best 1.04 ERA over 57 appearances – his previous…

Efton Chism III might’ve received more headlines and hype to this point, but he wasn’t the only undrafted rookie to earn a spot on the New England Patriots. Elijah Ponder, a fellow undrafted rookie and product of the Big Sky Conference, continues to fly under the radar despite having cracked the initial 53-man roster. Ponder did so as one of five edge defenders alongside veterans Harold Landry III, K’Lavon Chaisson, Keion White and Anfernee Jennings. Ponder beat out fifth-round pick Bradyn Swinson, who since has returned to the practice squad, as well as roster hopeful Truman Jones and others. Patriots…
“We’re certainly looking to stabilize the rotation down the stretch here where we’re playing important games, we want to give every opportunity to win as many of those as possible, and we think that Payton (Tolle) and Dustin (May) give us the best chance to do that right now,” said Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, after the club released veteran righty Walker Buehler on Friday. Neither stability nor victory were the theme of the following afternoon’s game. The Pirates took the series with a 10-3 win. Dustin May yielded seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in 5.1…
