The Boston Bruins have made their first trade of the NHL offseason. They have acquired the rights to 24-year-old defenseman Victor Söderström from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman prospect Ryan Mast and a 2025 seventh-round draft pick, the B’s announced Friday evening. Söderström is a right-shot defenseman who was the No. 11 overall pick by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2019 draft. He played four seasons between the NHL and AHL from 2020-21 through 2023-24. Söderström went back to his native Sweden to play for Brynas IF Gavle in the 2024-25 campaign. He tallied 37 points (nine goals,…

Aaron Judge is without question among the most dominant hitters of his generation, and right now Garrett Crochet is among the very best pitchers. Over the past week the two have treated baseball fans to some heavyweight battles, and up until the ninth inning it looked as if Crochet had the Yankees superstar on the ropes. But while the Red Sox ultimately got the last laugh, Judge offered yet another reminder of his greatness Friday, getting off the mat after three humbling at bats and leveling Crochet with a breathtaking knockout blow. After being struck out by Crochet in six…

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone put together a vintage performance in Friday’s loss to the Boston Red Sox. It’s damn-near impossible to find a better temper tantrum artist in MLB. Boone, to be fair, watched his squad come out on the losing end of two crucial calls in extra-innings. Anthony Volpe kicked things off by being thrown out at third base, with his initial safe call being overturned following a challenge by Boston. DJ LeMahieu then lined a ball that looked to clip the foul line — though it was called foul and ultimately upheld on a challenge by New…

I wrote this sentence down in my notebook before the ninth inning: “Shohei Ohtani is probably the only player in baseball who can win a game by himself. Garrett Crochet got as close as you can without holding a bat.” When Crochet wasn’t able to finish the job, the game felt like a lost cause. When Marcelo Mayer struck out with the winning run on third, the game felt like a lost cause. When Carlos Narvaez went down 0-2 with two outs, the game felt like a lost cause. Of course, it wasn’t a lost cause. Carlos Narvaez hit a…

WESTWOOD – The Needham boys volleyball team started Friday night firing on all cylinders on a stage the program – making its fifth straight Div. 1 state final appearance – is quite used to. But Brookline, in its first trip since it last won a state championship in 1992, wouldn’t be denied of the ultimate glory any longer. Anchored by junior setter Alec Smagula (49 assists, four blocks, three kills) and senior outside hitter Kris Vaivars (27 kills), the top-seeded Warriors (25-1) shook off a rocky start to end a 33-year title drought with a 3-1 win (20-25, 27-25, 25-22,…

Conor McGregor will forever hold a spot in his heart for the city of Boston. McGregor’s first fight in America took place in the summer of 2013 at Boston’s TD Garden, where he defeated Max Holloway. Two years later, McGregor scored a breakthrough TKO victory at the Garden, treating Dennis Siver like a punching bag amid his rapid ascension to superstardom. “I fought there twice and never got touched,” said McGregor. “The crowds were amazing. I love Boston.” There is constant speculation over whether McGregor will fight again, which last happened for the UFC in July 2021. It seems less…
