FOXBORO — Early in training camp, Drake Maye had a habit of opening team periods with a pass to to the same receiver. Stefon Diggs. Maye targeted Diggs no matter he lined up and no matter the route he was running just to find for an easy completion. Then, Maye often looked elsewhere and occasionally returned to his projected No. 1 receiver as the drill progressed. Naturally, as a second-year quarterback working with a four-time Pro Bowl wideout who wants the ball, Maye might feel pressure to do that again once the games begin. But not so fast. Maye said…

The Patriots granted veteran safety Marcus Epps’ request to be released on Tuesday, according to a source. Epps believed he was not a fit with the Patriots and asked to be released during Tuesday’s roster cutdowns. Epps, 29, had a quiet summer with the Patriots after signing a one-year contract as a free agent this offseason. The veteran defender entered the summer with six years of NFL experience under his belt, starting 45 games with the Eagles and Raiders. He entered the league in 2019 with the Vikings as a sixth-round pick out of Wyoming. The move leaves the Patriots…

The ability to shorten games with a bullpen is critical in baseball. The New York Yankees did it for years with Mariano Rivera, and now the Boston Red Sox are doing it with their own shutdown unit. Aroldis Chapman has been virtually unhittable this year, turning in the best season of his career. In 56 appearances this year, he’s 4-2 with a 1.06 ERA, a 0.69 WHIP, 3.0 WAR and 25 saves in 27 opportunities. His setup man, Garrett Whitlock, has been nearly as dominant. In 52 appearances, Whitlock’s 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP and a career-best…

There’s only one way to read the situation involving Patriots defensive end Keion White: He’s fallen down the depth chart. “I know that he’s been surpassed on the depth chart,” Patriots insider Phil Perry said on the Patriots Talk podcast after New England’s preseason finale. White played 30 snaps in that preseason finale against the New York Giants. While fellow veteran pass-rushers Harold Landry III and K’Lavon Chaisson stood on the sidelines in street clothes, White was in a helmet and shoulder pads. It was the most glaring indication that he’s slid in the positional pecking order behind Chaisson, who…

Welcome to cutdown day! By 4 p.m. Tuesday, every NFL team must trim its roster down to 53 players. Last week, the Patriots got a head start. On Friday, they released 14 players — mostly roster long shots — and then waived young offensive guard Layden Robinson on Sunday with an injury designation. Entering Tuesday, the Pats have 23 spots left to clear either via release, trade or placement on injured reserve. Candidates for IR include wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and Efton Chism III and linebacker Jahlani Tavai. For a second straight year, teams can place up to two players…

FOXBORO – Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has a potential solution to calm himself down when he’s feeling too “amped” to begin a game. Maye explained away an inaccurate pass in Week 2 of the preseason, when he threw high to wide receiver DeMario Douglas, as saying he was “a little amped early in the game.” The throw ricocheted off Douglas’ hands and into the arms of a defender, who dropped the ball. Maye also fumbled in the Patriots’ first preseason game. The young quarterback had the same explanation after throwing an interception in the second drive of his first career…

Fresh off a probably overdue (but sad) loss to the Yankees, the Sox trundled down I-95 to face the Orioles. They won, 4-3, in a tight game that was pretty much held down by the bullpen start, with one notable exception. The boys came through on offense, which is the best part. Giddyup.Led off with a home run. We tend to look kindly on that sort of thing.Hit the game-winning home run. We tend to look kindly on that sort of thing. He gave up a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth, and things looked bad. All he did…

After falling to the New York Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball, the Boston Red Sox bounced back with a pivotal 4-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, improving to 4-1 on their current road trip. Alex Cora went with a bullpen game for the series opener, starting Brennan Bernardino for an inning before handing the ball to Richard Fitts. Fitts was solid in his first Major League start since July 28, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts over four-plus innings and earning his first win since July 7. Fitts, who threw 40 of…

DALLAS (AP) — A basketball card autographed by Hall of Famers Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant has sold for nearly $13 million at auction, a record for any sports card. Heritage Auctions said there were 82 bids for the 2007-08 Upper Deck Logoman collection card before it sold Sunday for $12,932,000. That surpassed the $12.6 million paid for a 1952 Topps rookie card of baseball Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle at a Heritage auction in 2022. The memorabilia company did not reveal the buyer. The only card of its type, the Jordan-Bryant card features certified autographs of both players along…
