NEW YORK – The Red Sox and Yankees are neck-and-neck in a playoff race for the first time in years, but if you were hoping for the kind of high-stakes drama that defined their face-offs in the early aughts, Thursday was not the game for you. Until the ninth inning, that is. For the first eight frames, the most comparable element to those hang-on-every-pitch contests in ‘03 and ‘4 were the sold-out crowd (47,036) and the slowness of the game; it took the Red Sox three hours and 25 minutes to complete a 6-3 victory. But nothing says ‘Red Sox…

NEW YORK – Early Thursday afternoon, Jhostynxon Garcia was in the Red Sox Triple-A clubhouse getting a bite to eat when his manager pulled him into his office and asked him if he’d ever been to Yankee Stadium before. “Not yet,” the 22-year-old outfielder said. “Do you want to go?” Chad Tracy responded. “Of course,” Garcia replied. “Today?” Tracy asked. Less than four hours and one first-class plane ride later, Garcia walked into Yankee Stadium to join the Boston Red Sox. “Very special day, I didn’t expect this today,” Garcia said (through translator Carlos Benitez) as he sat in the…
A former Boston Red Sox star is joining the American League playoff hunt. According to Jeff Passan, the Houston Astros are signing former Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel. He’ll join the Astros’ major league roster. Kimbrel, 37, appeared in one game with the Atlanta Braves this season before being released. He didn’t allow a run, but his fastball averaged 91.6 mph, well below his prime. Last season, with the Baltimore Orioles, Kimbrel’s fastball averaged 93.9 mph. After being released by the Braves, the former Red Sox closer signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. His contract was never…
Worcester: PPD, Rain, Make-Up Today I peer at my voodoo doll that has allowed there to be at least one rainout every week on a Wednesday since June. The seams are tattered and I assure it to last just three more weeks. Bob Osgood’s onto us. You mustn’t break now. In all seriousness, Chad Tracy has some decisions to make for this double-header. Wednesday’s expected starter was Richard Fitts. Fitts is now taking Isaiah Campbell’s place in the Red Sox bullpen against the team that traded him to Boston at Yankee Stadium. It’s also funny knowing that Richard Fitts has…
NEW YORK – Back in June, Roman Anthony faced the Yankees just three games into his big-league career. On Thursday night, he’ll contend with them again, on their home turf. Anthony will lead off for the Red Sox in the first of a crucial four-game set at Yankee Stadium this weekend, as Boston looks to right the ship after dropping three in a row and eight of their last 12. It’s unclear when Jhostynxon Garcia will make his MLB debut, but the top outfield prospect is on his way to join the Red Sox in New York for the series…

Ja’Lynn Polk’s redemption story won’t be authored in 2025. The embattled Patriots receiver will miss all of this season due to a shoulder injury he suffered during New England’s preseason opener against the Washington Commanders, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Polk’s injury, which will require surgery, is to the same shoulder that underwent a procedure last offseason. “Sources: Patriots WR Ja’Lynn Polk will miss the entire 2025 season due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery,” Schultz wrote Thursday in an X post. “The 2024 second-round pick saw multiple specialists, and surgery was determined to be the best course…

FOXBORO – Armed with more cap space than the rest of the NFL and three extra draft picks next year, the Patriots are better positioned than most teams to strike a win-now trade. So with several big names potentially available – from Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin to Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons – would they pull the trigger? Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf gave a resounding yes on Monday. “Yeah, absolutely,” Wolf said before the Patriots’ latest training camp practice. “We’re talking to all 31 teams and trying to do what’s best for us. I…
FOXBORO — It’s been a promising, if imperfect, summer for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye entering his second NFL season. Maye has addressed some of his turnover issues this summer, especially in practice, and he still displays an intriguing skill set with his mobility, precision and big arm. But head coach Mike Vrabel came away with teachable moments from Week 2 of the preseason, when Maye went 4-of-7 for 46 yards with a dropped interception. Maye threw high to wide receiver DeMario Douglas in the Patriots’ first offensive drive. The ball bounced off Douglas’ hands directly to Vikings safety Tavierre Thomas,…
