Chris Paul, the “Point God” who was a 12-time All-Star selection and two-time Olympic gold medalist, announced his retirement on Friday in the capper of a 21-season career that will surely merit induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.Paul made the announcement on the first day of the NBA’s All-Star weekend at the home of the Los Angeles Clippers in Inglewood, California. Paul spent his final season — an abbreviated one — with the Clippers, who sent him home in December and wound up trading him to Toronto earlier this month. The Raptors knew Paul would never play in Toronto, and that begged…
New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs made his first court appearance of the offseason on Friday. The 32-year-old pleaded not guilty to felony strangulation charges brought about after an alleged incident with his personal chef in December. The arraignment for the Dec. 2 incident was originally slated to take place on Jan. 23, but was moved to Feb. 13 due to a “previously scheduled professional commitment.” His plea was the only significant outcome to play out at Friday’s court appearance. The judge scheduled Diggs to next appear for a pretrial hearing on April 1. Diggs’s attorney, Michael Schuster, told…
BRIGHTON – With a slight deficit heading into the final three relays, Wakefield’s boys track and field mustered up just enough to take home its second Div. 4 title in three seasons Friday night at The Track at New Balance. With three first-place finishes, including the top spot in the high jump (6 feet, 6 inches) and long jump (22-8.5) for senior JeMauri Belmer and the top spot in the 4×200 relay, the Warriors came away with 56 points to take down second-place Newburyport, which scored 54. Last year’s champion, Pembroke, placed third with 35. The dagger for Wakefield came…
Roman Anthony is set to join 11 of his Boston Red Sox teammates in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The budding superstar outfielder will play for Team USA if he passes his physical on Saturday, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. He would serve as the injury replacement for Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll, who recently suffered a broken hamate bone. If all goes well with his physical, Anthony will represent the United States alongside Red Sox reliever Garrett Whitlock. The 21-year-old has apparently had a change of heart after ending his rookie season with an oblique injury.…
By DAVE SKRETTA MILAN (AP) — American figure skating sensation Ilia Malinin fell twice in a disastrous free skate that sent him tumbling all the way off the podium at the Milan Cortina Olympics on Friday night, allowing Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan to claim a stunning gold medal. The self-styled “Quad God,” who led by a comfortable margin after the short program, merely had to deliver a mediocre performance to add individual gold to his team gold medal. Instead, the 21-year-old Malinin was trying to fight back tears after one of the worst nights of his career, one that left…
Don’t worry, Boston taxpayers. Mayor Michelle Wu is not using city dollars to send Seattle kids to an expensive World Cup match in their home city, a spokesperson from her office has told the Herald. “As part of a friendly Super Bowl wager between Boston and Seattle,” the spokesperson said, “Mayor Wu and the Boston26 World Cup Host Committee worked in partnership with the Seattle World Cup Host Committee to provide 12 tickets to a FIFA World Cup match for young people from Seattle at no expense to the City of Boston.” The Herald reported earlier this week that Wu…
There are not many questions about where players will play for the Boston Red Sox next season, but where Caleb Durbin and Marcelo Mayer line up will be something to watch. Durbin was the Milwaukee Brewers’ starting third baseman for most of the season last, but the Red Sox have not committed to making him their third baseman. Part of why is Marcelo Mayer’s glove in the hot corner. Mayer had a plus-two outs above average at third base last season. He played less than Durbin, but was a better defender. Whoever loses the third base job figures to be…
One thing the sabermetric revolution has taught us is that batting order doesn’t matter all that much. At least, not in the traditional sense of putting a speedy runner at the the top, someone who can handle the bat and move him over second, and power hitters in the middle. The general consensus now is that a team’s best hitter should hit second with a high-OBP hitter in front of him. But, ultimately, batting order doesn’t have a significant impact on the number of runs a team scores over the course of the season, and the best thing a team…
FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the Red Sox evaluating second and third base options for the second consecutive spring training, Trevor Story is the man in the middle once again. Taking questions for the first time since he reported to camp earlier this week, the veteran shortstop made his wishes clear with a statement that was diplomatic, but firm. “Ideally you’d like to get a full spring camp in with the infield unit as we have, just to go over communication style and what guys like,” Story said as he stood in front of his locker. “And those conversations are…
