Brad Marchand took an unconventional path to fueling up Saturday night at Amerant Bank Arena. The pressure was on for the Panthers and the Hurricanes entering the third period of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, as Florida and Carolina were tied at 1-1. But Marchand couldn’t have looked any less tense, as TNT cameras in the second intermission captured the former Boston Bruins captain diving into some kind of dessert. Marchand proudly offered the details of his sweet treat after the game. “Yeah, that’s a little chocolate chip cookie dough Blizzard right there,” Marchand said. “You can’t beat…

The next phase of the Boston Red Sox’ youth movement has begun. The Red Sox are promoting top infield prospect Marcelo Mayer to the big-league club, the team confirmed Saturday. ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported Mayer’s call-up. Mayer is the No. 2 ranked prospect in the organization and the No. 8 prospect in the sport, per MLB Pipeline. Boston selected Mayer with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. The Southern California native was the consensus No. 1 prospect in his draft class, but he slid to the Red Sox after the Pittsburgh Pirates picked catcher Henry…

Several hours before first pitch on Sunday, several Red Sox players and coaches took the field to run through some pregame ground ball drills. Two of those were rookies Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, and the sight of the top prospects working together at Fenway Park was one fans have long dreamed of. The only thing was, most people probably envisioned Campbell and Mayer working together at second base and shortstop, not first and third base. Marcelo Mayer is taking ground balls at third and throwing to Kristian Campbell at first, exactly like we expected to see at Fenway Park…

The Red Sox and the Orioles will play the finale of their four-game series Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. After making his MLB debut Saturday evening, Marcelo Mayer will stay in Boston’s lineup for the matinee matchup. Mayer will stick at third and preserve the sixth spot in the batting order, but he was one of the few lineup mainstays coming off the 2-1 loss to Baltimore. Wilyer Abreu, Abraham Toro, David Hamilton and Narváez all will be back in the starting nine after spending most of Saturday night on the bench. They will all be at their typical positions…

Marcelo Mayer has been called up to the majors! Unfortunately, it’s really only because Alex Bregman got hurt. But better late than never, right? And with the stats he’s put up in Worcester, he looks like he’s at least ready to give the big leagues a try. With the second of the famed Big Three Prospects (Kristian Campbell, Mayer, and Roman Anthony) now in Fenway with the Red Sox, it makes me wonder: Was Roman Anthony being called up last what we expected? Was Kristian Campbell being called up first what we expected? Did we anticipate everyone coming up at…

Before Lucas Giolito blanked the Baltimore Orioles for seven innings in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader, the only Red Sox starter to even reach five innings in any of the first eight games of this 10-game homestand was Garrett Crochet (twice). But to paraphrase Pedro Martinez in the 2004 ALCS, all Giolito could do was pitch; he could do nothing about the fact that the Red Sox once again couldn’t overcome a one-run deficit, and lost 2-1. Hours after they won Game 1 of the doubleheader by one run to get over .500, they dropped a one-run game to fall…
