QUINCY – Champions don’t let go without a fight. The two-time defending Major League Rugby champion New England Free Jacks hosted the Chicago Hounds Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium needing a win to advance to the final. And it looked like a chance to earn MLR’s first three-peat was a lost cause as the Jacks fell behind 17-0 54 minutes into the match. Instead, the Jacks stunned Chicago 21-20 to advance to the title match in Pawtucket, RI, next Saturday. The comeback began with back-to-back tries by Jed Melvin and Cam Nordli-Kelemeti. Kyle Ciquera scored at the 78 minute mark and…

Anyone who thought Rafael Devers wouldn’t homer against the Red Sox this weekend wasn’t familiar with the slugger’s game. Likewise for anyone who thought Devers wouldn’t eventually find a Red Sox fastball he could clobber. Devers’ first home run in a Giants uniform, combined with yet another Red Sox error, proved the difference in his new team’s 3-2 victory over his former ball club. Brayan Bello was largely effective in his 12th start of the season, striking out six and issuing one walk on 94 pitches (59 strikes). It was his fourth consecutive start of at least six innings, his…

Major League Baseball is investigating Sean Hjelle after his wife, Caroline, alleged that the San Francisco Giants reliever abused her and recently abandoned her and their two sons. Hours before the Red Sox and Giants opened up a three-game series in San Francisco on Friday, Caroline Hjelle posted a video on TikTok with “When my MLB husband abandons us on Mothers Day a week after this once I finally found about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I’ve been raising two boys alone” superimposed over footage of her and her sons. She also captioned the video,…
San Francisco Giants designated hitter Rafael Devers belted his first home run in the uniform on Saturday… and it came against the Boston Red Sox. Did you expect it to happen any other way? Devers, who was traded from one coast to another just six days prior, smoked a Brayan Bello fastball into the opposite-field bleachers at Oracle Park. It’s something everyone in the opposing dugout had celebrated many times before, but not this time. You can check out the big blast here. Devers has been good, if not unremarkable, through his first week with San Francisco. The Giants have…
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers had a consistent mantra when he addressed the Boston media for the first time since his surprising trade from the Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants five days ago.“The past is in the past,” Devers said repeatedly Friday when asked about his time with the Red Sox and why the relationship deteriorated so much this season that the team traded him less than two years into a 10-year, $313.5 million contract he signed in 2023.Devers did give one piece of insight when asked what he would tell Red Sox fans about why he is willing to play…
The drama around Rafael Devers’ departure from the Boston Red Sox has overshadowed the trade that sent him to the San Francisco Giants. What about the players Boston received in the blockbuster deal? The Red Sox acquired left-hander Kyle Harrison, right-hander Jordan Hicks, minor-league outfielder James Tibbs III, and minor-league righty Jose Bello in exchange for their homegrown slugger. While Harrison and Hicks should be able to help the big-league club this season, Red Sox fans can’t help but wonder if they could have gotten more for a player of Devers’ caliber. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Giants insider Alex Pavlovic…
Jrue Holiday continues to be floated in trade speculation with the Boston Celtics expected to cut salary and try to better balance their books. That’s nothing new. A new development, however, is Holiday’s potential inclusion in a blockbuster trade also involving Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant. But that’s not to say it will be a 1-for-1 swap, though Durant reportedly would welcome such opportunity in Boston. “The focus, for me, is on Jrue Holiday,” NBA insider Zach Lowe said on “The Zach Lowe Show.” “I think there are even — I’ve heard there have been at least very broad discussions…
I had a Saturday feature article written and ready about the timeline of all the Red Sox drama this season, but I’d finished it before the end of last night’s game, our first against the San Francisco Giants and our first facing Rafael Devers in another uniform. And then the bottom of the 9th came. Aroldis Chapman was tasked with closing out the game. The Sox had a 7-5 lead and, with Chapman pitching, it looked like it’d be easy enough to hold, given how good Chapman has been. He struck out the leadoff batter, Heliot Ramos, on five pitches.…
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora put a pretty decent bow on the Rafael Devers trade prior to a matchup against his now-former slugger on Friday. It’ll never actually end, but you catch my drift. Devers’ shipment off to the other side of the country brought about many reactions, reports and opinions. Yahoo published a pretty scathing report that shifts blame toward that of the organization. The Boston Globe did something similar, but toward that of the player. ESPN kinda buried both. Cora was asked whether or not he’d like to clear the air on any of it. “Clear the…
