“Early’s 16% K-BB, and near-3.50 ERA in both projections, is startling. Of course, thanks to the logjam of pitchers on this team, he’s projected for only 50-60 innings at the moment. That being said, there are only six starting pitchers on The BAT, and seven starting pitchers on Steamer who are projected to have a better ERA than Connelly Early in the American League.“Early’s biggest strength at first glance, to put it in the most cliche and lazy way possible, is that he “knows how to pitch.” More specifically, he’s got a fastball, curveball, changeup, slider and sweeper, and while…

FOXBORO — The Patriots hit the field without three starters Thursday at the start of their first practice in the leadup to Super Bowl LX, where quarterback Drake Maye and the other quarterbacks were present but did not throw. Maye was present in uniform after being listed as limited on Wednesday’s projected injury report. Before Thursday’s practice, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said he had “not much” concern over Maye’s right shoulder injury. The Patriots will release their next injury report Thursday evening. Elsewhere at practice, inside linebacker Robert Spillane, outside linebacker Harold Landry and tight end Hunter Henry were all…

Only three teams have beaten the New England Patriots this season, and Maxx Crosby was on one of them. Crosby helped the Las Vegas Raiders beat the eventual AFC champions at Gillette Stadium in Week 1. The five-time Pro Bowler was a menace on defense, recording one sack and two quarterback hits on Drake Maye while also defending a pass. The Patriots steadily improved from there, losing just two games the rest of the way. Now, they’re in the Super Bowl after grinding out a 10-7 win over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game. Despite playing four months…

FOXBORO — In his first year of eligibility, Bill Belichick has reportedly been passed over for election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Belichick did not receive the minimum 40 of 50 votes from the Hall’s voting committee in the Coach/Contributor category, according to an ESPN report. The 73-year-old coach must wait until at least next year for enshrinement, likely along with other Super Bowl-winning head coaches Mike Shanahan and Tom Coughlin among others. It is unclear if Patriots owner Robert Kraft will be elected this year after being shut out in recent years. Kraft came out in support…

Onyeka Okongwu will need extensive dental work after a run-in with Celtics star Jaylen Brown’s elbow. Brown caught the Atlanta center in the mouth while trying to escape a double-team from Okongwu and Dyson Daniels during Wednesday’s Celtics-Hawks game at TD Garden. The collision dislodged at least two of Okongwu’s teeth — which he proudly displayed on social media after his team’s 117-106 win — and resulted in a flagrant 1 offensive foul for Brown. After the game, Brown praised Okongwu and said his elbow to the face was unintentional. “Just being aggressive like I always am,” Brown said. “Just…

The Boston Red Sox’s big offseason moves are done, but the team could still look to make minor moves to fill out the rest of its roster. Boston traded for starting pitchers Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, while signing Ranger Suarez, and the team also traded for first baseman Willson Contreras. However, the Red Sox have been linked to adding a catcher to the mix. The Red Sox currently have Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong projected as their catchers, and insider Chris Cotillo of MassLive expects the team to sign a veteran to a minor-league deal to compete for a…

The Hawks led by double digits for most of Wednesday night’s matchup as they cruised to a 117-106 victory. All five Hawks starters scored in double figures, including Nickeil Alexander-Walker (21 points) and Jalen Johnson (19 points). Jaylen Brown had a team-high 21 points for the Celtics. Eleven years ago, the Patriots and Seahawks clashed in the Super Bowl. Just 16 months ago, they played again. Since both games, a lot has changed. After missing the playoffs last year, Seattle reached Super Bowl LX as perhaps the only great team in the NFL this season, now ranked second in scoring offense and first in scoring defense. The Seahawks went 14-3 and never lost by more than four points, including a season-opening defeat at the hands of a 49ers team they just throttled by 35 in the divisional round of the playoffs. Last Sunday in the NFC championship…
