At long last, the Christian Gonzalez contract drama is over.
On Tuesday, the New England Patriots reportedly signed Gonzalez to a four-year extension worth $135 million ($102 million guaranteed). The deal makes Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history and the highest-paid Patriots player of all time.
Albert Breer of The MMQB shared additional details on Gonzalez’s contract, including the largest signing bonus ever given to a cornerback.
- $33 million signing bonus
- $53.928 million first two years—fully guaranteed.
- 2028 money becomes fully guaranteed in March 2027
- 2029 money becomes fully guaranteed in March 2028.
The Patriots are undoubtedly relieved to put Gonzalez’s contract situation behind them as they gear up for Wednesday night’s season opener in Seattle. Since being selected out of Oregon with the 17th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the 24-year-old has established himself as one of the league’s best shutdown corners. His talent displayed nationwide with an outstanding performance — albeit in a losing effort — against the Seahawks in Super Bowl 60.
All signs point toward Gonzalez getting even better and becoming a franchise cornerstone over the next few seasons. As New England begins to build around Gonzalez, it will soon have to start thinking about the next contract for third-year quarterback Drake Maye. The 2025 NFL MVP runner-up will be eligible for a lucrative extension of his own next spring.
For now, the Patriots are focused on avenging their Super Bowl loss in Week 1. Wednesday’s game against the Seahawks is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
