The Red Sox can’t catch a break at first base.

Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury at the beginning of the month, and less than a week after the 25-year-old went down, Romy González banged up his left quad on an in-game collision. González initially was projected to only miss a few days, but the utility man has been on the injured list since May 10.

González’s activation from the IL isn’t imminent either, as Alex Cora on Wednesday revealed the 28-year-old suffered a setback in his rehab when he started running.

“He’s not bouncing back the way we wanted,” Cora told reporters, per The Boston Globe. “It’s going to take longer than expected.”

With González sidelined, Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro will make up Boston’s first base platoon for the time being. Kristian Campbell also has been taking pregame reps at the position, though it’s unclear how soon the Red Sox would be willing to play the rookie at first — if at all.

That said, adding another position to Campbell’s plate could allow Boston to facilitate a certain highly anticipated promotion that could provide the club with a much-needed spark.
