A 0.00 ERA is awfully hard to maintain, especially for someone who spent three years out of the majors.

Drew Pomeranz has delivered one of MLB’s best comeback stories in 2025. The former Boston Red Sox pitcher entered Saturday with no earned runs — he gave up one unearned run — allowed in 26 appearances for the Chicago Cubs. Pomeranz’s feat is all the more remarkable considering he started the season in Triple-A after years of injury setbacks.

Unfortunately, all good things typically come to an end. Opening Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Pomeranz relinquished two earned runs before he could finish the first inning. His ERA skyrocketed all the way to 0.76.

The blemish doesn’t spoil Pomeranz’s feel-good return. He hadn’t served up an earned run in a major league outing since July 27, 2021.

Pomeranz threw five scoreless appearances before undergoing season-ending surgery on a torn flexor tendon four years ago. He worked just 4 2/3 minor league innings in 2022 and 5 2/3 in 2023 before having elbow surgery.

The Los Angeles Dodgers released Pomeranz in May 2024. He began this year in Triple-A Tacoma before the Seattle Mariners traded him to the Cubs, who joined the team in late April.

Pomeranz has proven a massive addition for the Cubs, who entered Saturday atop the National League Central at 53-36. Their bullpen’s 3.22 ERA ranks second to the San Francisco Giants.

An afterthought entering 2025, Pomeranz may work meaningful October innings for a World Series contender. Red Sox fans can root for him to start a new scoreless streak when the Cubs close their first half against the New York Yankees.
