GEORGETOWN  — Georgetown remains undefeated on the season after a convincing 87-26 boys basketball victory over Rockport.

On a night where the Royals (4-0) celebrated their Division 4 state championship from last season, the home team gave fans plenty to cheer for. The Royals’ pace and defensive tenacity helped them control this matchup.

Jomar Terrero led the charge for the Royals, stuffing the stat sheet with his team high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

“We need to keep the consistency,” said Terrero.

The Royals showed consistency on the offensive and defensive side, something head coach Kevin Fair preached to his team about on a daily basis.

“We’ve been a little inconsistent,” said Fair. “We’ve changed our style of play a little bit but the kids are adjusting.”

Prior to the game, the Royals welcomed back head coach Josh Keilty, who is now the head coach of the St. Mary’s Spartans, along with former players to culminate their championship season.

Not only did they honor their championship team, the Royals also honored former player Matt Torgersen with the retirement of his number 11 jersey.

“Matt Torgersen, the ultimate team player, the ultimate competitor, the best kid and we honor him every day,” said Fair

On hand to receive Torgersen’s retired jersey were his parents Joe and Lisa Torgersen and brother Joe Torgersen Jr., who could not have been any happier with the legacy their son has left and the lives he’s impacted.

Matt Torgersen, a three-year starter and a 2022 graduate of Georgetown, passed away from cancer last year.

“We’re just very honored, we’re honored they’re remembering Matty and they took the time to honor him,” said Lisa Torgersen.

On the championship, Joe Torgersen Sr. could not help but smile knowing his son played a part in helping Georgetown bring home the title by watching over the team.

“I looked up to the sky and I thanked Matt and I thanked coach Keilty’s dad Chuck cuz I think they were looking over the boys the entire journey,” said Torgersen.

For coach Keilty this moment closed a chapter of a place that’s dear to his heart. A hometown guy bringing a championship to his alma mater is a story book ending that not even Disney could write.

“They made history and no one can ever take it away from them,” said Keilty. “I’m just so grateful and fortunate to be a part of it, I’m gonna remember it and I’ll cherish it for the rest of my life.”

The Royals will look to move to 5-0 on the season when they take on Lowell on Tuesday.
