Liam MacPhee scored 37 points to help lead Stoneham to a 78-59 preliminary round boys basketball victory over Belchertown. The Spartans advance to the second round, where they will travel to face Weston on Friday night.
Charlie Tingos scored 13 points, Andre Chavushian added 10 in Belmont’s 51-40 preliminary round victory over Chelmsford. This sets the Marauders up with a first-round matchup at Andover.
Girls basketball
Olivia Gaynor scored 17 points and Sohpia Coubrn added eight points and six boards as No. 31 Peabody (15-6) cruised over No. 34 Medford 57-33 in the Div. 1 preliminary round matchup. The Tanners will face No. 2 Bishop Feehan on Friday night.
Boys hockey
After a scoreless first period, a relentless attack from No. 4 Arlington eventually caught fire en route to a 6-0 Div. 1 first-round win over No. 29 Needham. Two goals from Cam Petrillo and a goal and assist apiece from Drew Beck, Chuck Fecteau and Rubin Williams led scoring in a deep showing anchored by dominant play from Nolan Russell. Armen Vartanian also had two assists.
“If you get all the lines kicking in, it’s hard to stop,” said Arlington head coach John Messuri. “Depth is what it’s about in the tournament. So, that was big (to have so many contributions).”
Rockets goalie Carson Brownridge (38 saves) stood on his head early on, stopping the first 22 shots on him as the Spy Ponders continuously banged on the door. Petrillo finally got one past him about midway through the second by finishing off a puck at the backdoor post, shortly before Beck tipped in a shot from the point on the power play. Arlington then erupted for four goals in the third, showing off its scoring versatility.
“(Needham) played really hard, they weren’t just going to come in and lose,” Messuri said. “They just kept competing and competing. Eventually we got the dam to break, but it was hard.”
Girls hockey
Becca Sobol (two goals) and Violet Lorusso (goal) again found the back of the net for 32nd-ranked Shawsheen/Bedford/Lowell, powering a 3-1 win over No. 33 Central Catholic in a Div. 1 preliminary round matchup. The MVC/DCL Small rivals had split their regular season series, but the Rams took the rubber match to advance to play No. 1 Notre Dame Academy (H) in the first round.
