Marcelo Mayer was full of excitement after finding out he’ll be able to live out his Red Sox dream Saturday.
Triple-A Worcester manager Chad Tracy told Mayer he was Fenway-bound, much to the delight of his teammates, including Roman Anthony. Boston hadn’t made the call-up official amid concerns around Alex Bregman and his quad injury, which didn’t feel better after Friday. The All-Star third baseman received an MRI on Saturday morning.
Teammates congratulated Mayer on his big accomplishment, and after a hiccup where he couldn’t find his keys, the 22-year-old reacted to his long-awaited call-up.
“I’m excited. I’m really excited,” Mayer told reporters, per MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day. “It’s been a pretty emotional 30 minutes. I’m super excited.”
Mayer impressed in spring training and started the season on fire, leading Triple-A Worcester with nine home runs along with 43 RBIs on a .818 OPS. He’ll join Kristian Campbell on the major league club as Roman Anthony waits for his opportunity.

“… That rush that I felt, it’s something I wish everybody can experience,” Mayer said of his conversation with Tracy.
Boston needs infield depth, but it also needs reliable bats. The hope is that Mayer can provide that if Bregman lands on the injured list.
