Major League Baseball’s trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Boston Red Sox continue to be linked by MLB insiders to some of the biggest names rumored to be available on the market.

While the Red Sox have emerged as a team that’s actively seeking to make upgrades in the starting rotation, the team has also been rumored to be looking for an upgrade at first base following Triston Casas’ season-ending knee injury.

While Romy González and Abraham Toro have done a fine job in Casas’ absence, the Red Sox have already been connected to Baltimore Orioles All-Star Ryan O’Hearn and Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Josh Naylor. While answering questions about the Red Sox trade deadline plans on the Fair Territory podcast, host Ken Rosenthal said he believes the Red Sox are looking for a right-handed bat.

“The Red Sox need to be active,” said Rosenthal. “They need to get another starter; they need another bat, too. First base would be the spot to do it, and maybe it’s Josh Naylor or Ryan O’Hearn. Well, they would prefer, of course, a right-handed bat. So, the Red Sox are another team to watch as we get toward the deadline.”

Rosenthal’s comments about the Red Sox having a preference for a right-handed bat certainly stand out as both O’Hearn and Naylor are left-handed hitters. While the team hasn’t been connected to any notable right-handed bats, it remains possible that team president of baseball operations Craig Breslow is still waiting for the market to fully develop before making a deal for either slugger.
