The Patriots granted veteran safety Marcus Epps’ request to be released on Tuesday, according to a source.

Epps believed he was not a fit with the Patriots and asked to be released during Tuesday’s roster cutdowns.

Epps, 29, had a quiet summer with the Patriots after signing a one-year contract as a free agent this offseason. The veteran defender entered the summer with six years of NFL experience under his belt, starting 45 games with the Eagles and Raiders. He entered the league in 2019 with the Vikings as a sixth-round pick out of Wyoming.

The move leaves the Patriots with Jabrill Peppres, Jaylinn Hawkins, Craig Woodson, Dell Pettus, Kyle Dugger and Brenden Schooler at safety. The release bodes well for Pettus’ chances of making the 53-man roster.
