The New England Patriots offense is off to a fantastic start this season. Quarterback Drake Maye and veteran receiver Stefon Diggs are significant contributors to the offense’s success.

The 31-year-old receiver has 33 receptions for 456 yards over seven games this season. Diggs succeeds largely because he shows his hands late, a strategy offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels saw from another great receiver.

“Randy (Moss) was spectacular at it, McDaniels said on Thursday, via Patriots on CLNS. “Probably the best I’ve ever seen. These guys are really skilled.”

Diggs reveals his hands late, which keeps the defender guessing about whether Maye will throw to him. In the NFL, throwing windows close within seconds, so Diggs needs to display his hands as late as possible to increase the chances of completing the pass.

New England’s most crucial offseason move, aside from hiring head coach Mike Vrabel, was signing Diggs. Maye has made an extraordinary leap this season, thanks in large part to Diggs’ impressive performance.

Diggs will need to showcase his late hands on Sunday when the Patriots take on the Cleveland Browns, a team that has given up an average of 173.7 passing yards per game this season.
