FOXBORO — The Patriots placed cornerback Marcellas Dial on injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday.
Dial tore his ACL in practice on Monday, a source confirmed. The 2024 sixth-round pick suffered the injury during 11-on-11 drills and was carted off the field after being tended to by trainers.
The Patriots also placed defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy on injured reserve and released tight end Tyler Davis.
To fill their spots on the 90-man roster, the Patriots signed defensive tackle Bryce Ganious and running back JaMycal Hasty and claimed cornerback Tre Avery off waivers from the 49ers.
Hasty was with the Patriots last season. Avery spent two seasons under Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel with the Titans. Ganious is an undrafted free agent out of Wake Forest.
Dial was being used in training camp as the Patriots’ backup slot cornerback behind Marcus Jones. He also ran as a top gunner last season as part of an expanded special teams role. The 24-year-old played 17 games and registered 12 tackles with a forced fumble.
With Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis also banged up, Avery, Jones, Alex Austin, DJ James, Miles Battle, Isaiah Bolden, Kobee Minor, Brandon Crossley and Jordan Polk remain healthy at cornerback.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss was first to report Dial’s ACL tear.
