The Marlins swam up to Boston for tonight’s kickoff of the weekend series, and Sanda Alcantara was ready. The former Cy Young winner held Boston hitless (and without a baserunner) for four innings but eventually got bit in the sixth inning, when Alex Bregman doubled home Roman Anthony to tie it at 1. None of it would have been possible without Lucas Giolito, who managed to quiet most of the Marlins lineup including flash phenom Jacob Marsee. (Marsee your way back to the bench, son!)
Anyhow the Sox held onto the tie until the ninth and then won it easily. That’s all that matters.
Giolito looked lights out once again, allowing 1 run over 6.1 innings with 5 strikeouts in another promising start. It just took a while to come into view in light of Alcantara’s strong start.
Two huge walks? Two huge walks. He scored both of the team’s runs because of them. He’s so dang good, folks.
Jarren Duran (except the 9th inning)
The swoon continues, as he batted third and came up hitless again, this time against a righty (albeit a very good one). Contrast him with Roman Anthony, who drew a walk after facing an 0-2 count that led to the Sox’s first run, and, well, there it is. He did draw a crucial walk in the ninth but, it being the ninth, I didn’t want to rewrite all of this, but it was Good.
Also hitless. He’s just not good. Not his fault, really, because someone else should be playing first base right now but instead is swatting flies out west (and missing them).
Also hitless! And not great, tho capable of being good. But the golden sombrero doesn’t look good on anyone.
It’s a walk-off! Trevor Story ends it quite swiftly, given the previous tension of the game. No complaints!
