The hits keep on coming for the 2026 Boston Red Sox, just not on the field.
It doesn’t sound like Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet will be activated from the injured list any time soon. The 26-year-old left-hander, who hasn’t pitched since April 25 due to shoulder and lat ailments, shared a concerning update on his lat strain on Wednesday.
Crochet said the injury — initially diagnosed as a “very low grade” lat strain — “is a lot worse than we thought,” per The Boston Globe. He added that he has “no idea” when he will be cleared to throw again.
The Red Sox recently transferred Crochet to the 60-day IL, making June 25 the earliest he could be activated. Now, a pre-All-Star break return seems like a long shot.
Crochet’s setback is just the latest piece of discouraging Red Sox injury news. Outfielder Roman Anthony still isn’t swinging a bat due to the wrist injury he suffered on May 4. Fellow former top prospect Marcelo Mayer was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup vs. the Tampa Bay Rays due to neck and back spasms.
Before being placed on the IL, Crochet posted a 3-3 record with an uncharacteristic 6.30 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over six starts.
After being swept by the Rays, the Red Sox will limp back to Boston with a 27-39 record. It’s the first time they’ve been 12 games under .500 in June since 1997.
They’ll welcome the Texas Rangers to Fenway Park for a three-game series on Friday.
