Coming off an 89-win season, a third-place finish in the AL East and their first playoff appearance in four years, the Boston Red Sox are trending in the right direction. However, they still have work to do this offseason if they want to be a true World Series contender next year.

That will likely entail some major moves, similar to last winter when the Red Sox traded for Garrett Crochet, signed Alex Bregman and added Aroldis Chapman. Boston needs several impact players, ideally in the middle of the lineup and at the top of the rotation.

Accordingly, Red Sox beat writer Alex Speier expects Craig Breslow’s front office to make more bold moves this offseason to strengthen the roster heading into 2026.

.@alexspeier on the Red Sox approach this offseason:

“I would be really surprised if the Red Sox had a run-it-back offseason. I would be pretty surprised if they had a looking to just move food around the plate offseason. I think that there are going to be some big swings again… pic.twitter.com/MLZWRkPqHR

“I would be really surprised if the Red Sox had a run-it-back offseason. I would be pretty surprised if they had a looking-to-just-move-food-around-the-plate offseason,” Speier said on Wednesday’s episode of the SoxProspects.com podcast. “I think that there are going to be some big swings again in this offseason, potentially measured by the end of the collective bargaining agreement.”

That’s encouraging news for Boston fans and aligns with what the front office has said publicly. Red Sox leadership has stressed the need to be aggressive and have a sense of urgency this winter, indicating that some big swings could be in the cards.

Acquiring a proven starter and a big-name bat would certainly qualify. Boston has plenty of money to spend and prospects to trade if needed, so it should be another busy offseason for the Red Sox.
