The Boston Red Sox have reportedly shown interest in free agent slugger Eugenio Suarez.

Boston is searching for a bat to help build out its lineup, and Suarez’s name has come up as a potential fit. However, Red Sox insider Chris Cotillo reported on Saturday that the team’s interest in Suarez isn’t as strong as other free agents.

“Red Sox have been in touch with Eugenio Suarez but sources indicate their interest in him has been lukewarm to this point,” Cotillo wrote on X on Saturday. “Not at the stage of offering. Could be related to Alex Bregman pursuit.

“Suarez was fourth in the majors with 196 Ks last year (Schwarber, Devers in his range) and the Red Sox are trying to put the ball in play more. No player is perfect, of course.”

Suarez spent last season between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. He hit .228 with 49 home runs and 118 RBIs and would start at third base.

Yet, it appears the Red Sox are more interested in a reunion with Bregman over Suarez. Regardless, Red Sox’s chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said at the end of the Winter Meetings that the team still has some needs to address, and a bat is one of them.

“Sure, we came in looking to address some specific needs that I’ve talked about,” said Breslow, via MLB.com. “As we get ready to leave here, those needs still exist, so we’ve got to figure out a way to fill them.”

Boston’s big moves of the offseason so far are trading for starters Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo.
