Alex Bregman and Hunter Dobbins will both be activated from the injured list ahead of Friday’s game, a Red Sox source confirmed following Thursday’s win.

To clear space on the active roster, the Red Sox have optioned infielder David Hamilton and right-hander Isaiah Campbell to Triple-A Worcester.

Hamilton has primarily come off the bench for the Red Sox throughout the season and is currently batting .179 with three home runs, 15 stolen bases and a .505 OPS in 61 games. Hamilton has provided value on defense and on the base paths, but he has not been as impactful at the plate following a rookie season in which he batted .248, hit 17 doubles and posted a 2.6 wins above replacement mark.

The move also paves the way for rookie Marcelo Mayer to remain in the majors and assume the bulk of the playing time at second base. Both Mayer and Hamilton bat left-handed, meaning it would have been impossible for both to remain on the roster once Bregman was back playing third every day.

Campbell was called up from Triple-A earlier this week after Richard Fitts was optioned to provide additional bullpen depth ahead of the All-Star break. The right-hander appeared in one game, allowing two runs in two innings in Wednesday’s 10-2 win over the Colorado Rockies, and will now go back down to accommodate the returning Dobbins, who is scheduled to start Friday.
