No one has been steadier for the 2025 Red Sox than closer Aroldis Chapman. Actually, no one has been steadier for the 2025 Red Sox than closer Aroldis Chapman and setup man Garrett Whitlock. Check this out:
But Chapman has now allowed two earned runs in last 2.1 innings pitched, and this has come amidst a slight but real drop in velocity. Nevertheless, the Sox aren’t worried. (Tim Healey, Boston Globe)
Chapman rebounded last night against the Yankees, but it was Garrett Crochet who was the pitching star of the evening, thanks to his 12 strikeouts, even if he gave up some loud contact at times. The Red Sox have now gone undefeated against the Yankees every time Crochet has taken the mound, highlighting the very reason he brought to Boston in the first place. (Peter Abraham, Boston Globe)
And, unlike Chapman, there are no worrying signs with Crochet’s velocity. In fact, Crochet threw harder last night than his season averages, dialing it up and saying that he doesn’t “want to have any regret on my mind here in a couple weeks.” (Christopher Smith, Mass Live)
The Red Sox are still in control of a postseason spot, so hopefully no one will have any regrets in a few weeks. Nevertheless, things are getting tight and, unfortunately, the Sox have the hardest remaining schedule amongst AL contenders. (Stephen J. Nesbitt, Chad Jennings, The Athletic)
Put it all together and it’s clear we could be in for a wild two weeks of baseball. (Rob Bradford, WEEI)
And in case you were wondering what the magic number is (God, it’s been a while since we could even say those words, huh) it’s currently sitting at 10.
