The Red Sox will be without one of their biggest workhorse relievers for much of the home stretch.
The club announced Friday that left-hander Brennan Bernardino has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain and that fellow lefty Chris Murphy has been recalled from Triple-A to take his place on the roster.
The move is retroactive to Sept. 10, meaning Bernardino could be eligible to return in time for the team’s final regular season series against the Detroit Tigers.
Bernardino has been a mainstay of the Red Sox bullpen over the past three seasons and currently ranks tied for fourth on the team with 55 appearances in 2025. Bernardino has posted a 3.14 ERA over a career-high 51.2 innings, and he remains among the club’s most used relievers despite having spent three weeks in Triple-A from late July into mid August.
Since returning to the big league club on Aug. 19 Bernardino has posted a 3.38 ERA over his last eight appearances.
Murphy was recently optioned to Triple-A Worcester to clear space on the roster for Kyle Harrison, but his stay in Worcester proved brief. The 27-year-old lefty has appeared in 17 MLB games for the Red Sox, posting a 2.81 ERA over 25.2 innings while holding opposing batters to a .157 average.
