The Boston Red Sox, like every team, will be looking to build depth throughout their organization as part of their free agency plans. The Red Sox signed 25-year-old pitcher Osvaldo Berrios on Monday, according to his transaction log.

While Berrios is not one of the superstars fans want the Red Sox to sign this winter, he can still be a solid addition. He spent last season pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates.

Berrios signed with the Athletics in 2017 and signed with the Cardinals in 2024. He did not have a great season overall, but was able to find some success in Double-A. In 28 Double-A games, he had a 3.74 ERA and 48 strikeouts.

He made four starts at the Double-A level, but was used exclusively out of the bullpen in Triple-A. He struggled in Triple-A, pitching to a 9.20 ERA in 12 games. He has a career 5.44 ERA in the minor leagues.

Berrios will likely start the season in the minor leagues. However, he has already reached the Triple-A level and could be called upon to help out in the big leagues soon. The Red Sox assigned him to Triple-A Worcester after signing him.

While the Red Sox have made it known they are interested in adding a frontline starter, adding pitching depth is also very important. Injuries happen over the course of the season, and teams rely on minor league arms to help cover innings.

Berrios is a low-risk addition for the Red Sox. If he shines during spring training or during the minor league season, the Red Sox could consider calling him up for his debut. If not, a minor league deal is not going to cost them much.
